Found a cool trick

Some skins get rid of the black background behind the text labels for icons on the home screen. Slate does this as well as some others. Gives it a clean look IMO.

So, where do we get these skins? I'm an Android newbie just learning and so skins is pretty far down on my priority list as far as things to do. I have my hands full just learning to use my phone right now.

Theyre already on your phone, just hit the paint palate button, look at the third row down called skins

on the Main screen the button beside the one that says Phone,it looks like a painters pallet. Press that will give you your skin options.
