foxfi on jelly bean?

You don't need a ROM if all you want is tether. What are you looking to do with root?

I am a noob to all this, but would like to be able to learn more about the possibilities of rooting an Android. I have read a couple forums on here and notice that the ROM offer other phones OS and was curious if you can edit, perse the color on the icons or make the phone faster, as far as response time. I was interested in Artic HD but have not had the balls to go that far yet cause I am using safestrap 3.11 and some of the forums show a different screen(v2.2) while in the safe strap menu. I don't want to take a chance and brick my phone or mess anything up. Better safe than sorry. I was curious about what other users on here were using and just exploring this site. Tons of great info and amazing stuff on here.

Juno fixed some other problems in time. I suggest that you use the blue tooth or tether and wait for Juno to provide a fix. By the way I cannot use Netflix with Blue tooth or tether so be prepared for this.

I am able to use netflix, my slingbox,xbox360,and laptop. All the while taking that stupid update a 4:30 this am. I had to reroot my phone. I used Razr blade root . After rooting purchase sqlite editor (through google play $3.00) Then using sqlite editor select ?Settings Storage? com.motorola.android.providers.settings, which is the one with mailbox and wrench icon. Then select?settings.db?. Then Select ?settings?. Then scroll down to _id number 150 where it says ?entitlement_check? for name. Once you see that Do a long-press on the value ?1″ by entitlement_check, select ?Edit Field?, change it to ?0″. After that Reboot your phone and start Mobile Hotspot app (fox fi or whatever you used), you should now be able to tether without the app leading you to pay.

Hope This Helps on Razr Maxx jb 4.1.2 rooted and working fine!!

Just to offer another option. Look into Open Garden, it's a mesh networking application that allows Android devices and OSX + Windows machines to share internet between them. It's kind of like Bluetooth tethering... but not really. Think of a peer to peer structure with each device/machine having the client installed as it's own node and sharing bandwidth between them.

No root necessary.

Not sure why everyone makes it hard to tether your phone. Use wifi tether. You need root but no silly database editing. I was running my phone, netbook, ipod and tablet off of it with no issues.

Android app name: WiFi Tether

Rooting is not always an option. For example I have rooted my N7 thus proving I am not afraid to root, but I cannot root my Maxx because getting work email is an absolute must, and my employer will only make work email available using Good For Enterprise. My Good Admin has root detection tools that can be used to boot me off the network. The loss of Fox-fi has me really bummed because I don't like the bluetooth option and rooting the Maxx is not a possibility for me. Hopefully something can be done to the app to restore access similar to that available before the JB update.

Root, change the sql for foxfi, then unroot. What does a rooted phone do for email control in an enterprise environment? Why is a rooted phone not allowed? That is just messed up. It has no effect!

It is considered less secure because it opens up your phone to other vulnerabilities. It isn't an uncommon practice.

Anything requiring root access pops up from SU for approval. What exploits? I know providers for secure content that you purchase don't like it because you can circumvent their stuff.

Sure it may ask, but if you work in IT you know how often users just approve and click through messages without paying attention. When allowing them to store confidential information on their device you want to prevent as many possible holes as possible.

But if you can offer a service without even needing root, people will go there first. Finding something difficult to do is subjective (even rooting). Most people don't want to configure settings to have something work.... and they shouldn't.

Those same users download through play store or amazon. Typically, those who root read up on what root is and does.

I am still curious on what exploits are out there. Rooting is similar to admin access, therefore any product that has admin access on a system has the same security risk.

Which is also why most companies avoid giving their users admin rights.

Just sayin', I'd root my phone if I needed to but prefer to not waste that time... I've actually rooted previous phones for WiFi tethering setups, but now I just use Open Garden. ;)
Not rooting is preferable to most and offering a solution that services non-rooted devices will then work for everyone. Obviously if all devices had the easy choice of getting root access, that would be the best... but that's simply not the case.

I don't know about the admin privileges in reference to preventing vulnerability... to me it seems like a simple element of control on part of Google and the carriers.

I had problems with open garden. Plus the requirement to have the app on all the devices. Not all apps could access the internet either.

The benefits of a p2p structure far surpass the simple requirement of installing the app on all devices. Just need to convince iOS to stop being so controlling and let developers have more flexibility... or just convince everyone to use Android instead.

And the problem with specific apps is a bug in Android OS: their ConnectivityManager doesn't check for VPN as a mode of connectivity. They claim to be fixing it: https://code.google.com/p/android/i...ogle.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666#c31

Anyways... Open Garden isn't perfect (yet) but non-rooting and the p2p infrastructure is enough to help a lot of users get the internet to the devices they need it on.

Foxfi works with the PDANet tether. The only issue I found is that after I turn my laptop into a hotspot, my Xbox cannot use the internet connection. This is on windows vista though. I think that if it is done on a Windows 7 or higher it would work fine. All you have to do is tether the phone to the computer and then turn your computer into a hotspot.
