FPS vs Face Unlock

I vastly prefer fingerprint reader over face unlock.
I had a pixel 4 and hated it because of the lack of a fingerprint reader. I found that unlocking in the dark, or when the lighting conditions were wrong was a pain in the keester. Fingerprint works in any lighting condition and works intuitively nearly every time.

FPS!!!!!!!

Not due to masks, haven't worn one for quite a time now. My old LG G7 FPS opened the phone a heck of a lot faster than my 4XL. The face unlock might be the only thing about the 4XL I do not like.

That is exactly why I didn't go for the Pixel 4. I didn't want to not have the fingerprint scanner. I too found that the FPS can be faster than Face Unlock.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the FPS is the preferred choice.

I ordered the 5 yesterday and am not anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I don't see my work ever not requiring masks. We WILL be wearing masks forever, because our society always caves in to minority groups wanting to control the behavior of the majority.

If that is true, might be time to change it! But not wanting to get political.

However, even though I do not like the face unlock feature vs. FPS, it is not due to when masks were worn inside a store (only times I have worn a mask outside, even in crowds, was when raking dried leaves mixed with dried crap apples, and when cleaning out garage and the dust was cause me to sneeze every five seconds....mask did help). That was not the fault of the phone. I don't like face unlock (or at least the unlock on my 4XL) since it is very slow and I can actually punch in my four digit code faster. While my previous phone, a LG G7 with a FPS, was extremely fast. Too bad the UI was on the phone was terrible.

I want both, oneplus, Samsung have both. No reason pixel can't too. I also don't like the back fps. I use my phones when in a dock or desk/table. Hated having to pick up the pixel in order to use it. One plus and Samsung also have double tap to sleep, yet pixel's don't! :-[

I feel like it's the best of both worlds when you have at least two biometrics available. If I had to choose one over the other, it'd totly be FPS - either on-screen or rear-mounted. But having options is always a good thing.

Masks or no masks, I still favor rear FPS. Options are definitely good as everyone has their preferences.

I really am happy I got the 5. It's the perfect size and I'm enjoying having the rear fps back.

You know, I still found myself sometimes reaching for the back of my S10 some days, thinking I'd be able to unlock it that way. 🤣

When I had the 4xl it just wouldn't recognise my face many times. I gave the phone to my husband and he loves face unlock.

A friend told me it is due to not smiling when looking at the phone. :)
I wondered if it were a skin colour thing. Me being Cafe au lait vs Doug being creamy white. I had heard that face ID sometimes struggled with darker skin tones.

From my experience, I do believe light is a factor. My face unlock works flawlessly in, basically, total darkness. It's under lighted conditions such as inside a house where the problem is most prominent.

I'm also a Doug and kind of white. :)
