I'm going to Canada next week (from the US) - and trying to figure out a better way to text/talk/surf.

Here's Verizon's charges for usage in Canada:

$0.50 to send text and $0.05 to receive text.
$15 for 1000 voice minutes
$25 for 100mb data or pay per use $2.05 per mb.

I know the easy solution is to seek wifi whenever possible, but even then, are there apps for sending texts/talking via wifi, etc? I know of Skype, but that's about it.

Any other tips or tricks or solutions to not spend a ridiculous amount for the 4 days I'll be there?

Thanks!

i think the best bet would be to add global data to your plan for just 1 month.
It gives you 100mb of usage which should be plenty for 4 days. It's $25.

with it, you can use a message service like kakao, whatsapp and pair it with magicjack app to make phone calls.
you can also make calls with kakao if the other person has kakao.

after your trip you can cancel the global data for the next month. the whole biz would cost you $25.
