Any word on if Android can/will try to go after rooted evos with wireless tether?

I don't see Android going after the customer, but Sprint yes. I see like this though, the evo has been out for almost a year now and Sprint still hasn't done anything. So I don't really see it happening. Again that is my opinion.

In the reports that have been going around, it was Google that was going to (kowtowing to carriers) be doing the dirty work by shutting down apps that provide tethering.

Um, android is not going to go after anyone for wireless tethering, the ability to wireless tethering does not hinder the ability of the android system, therefore android does not care if you do it, wireless tethering only effects carriers as they are the ones providing the data which is the only thing affected by wireless tethering. The only thing that android if they have eaten enough paint chips and want to try to go after someone would be for the actual ability of rooting, but the government would shut that down or any court of law would shut that down, you own a device and you can do whatever you want to it (as long as you do not break any laws- such as use your newly rooted phone for stalking purposes) by rooting it and then you want to go back to take advantage of warranty, well the manufacturer says you rooted it so we will not help, but again the manufacturer is only one of thousands of people/business's that can fix your phone. The only thing that may upset google when it comes to rooting is you are doing what they intend to do it with new devices, you just get it now (example: we have cars that can run on water or plasma generators that do not use fossil fuel or pollute, but oil companies/car companies make a new car that gets 5 mpg more than the last year model, again the person that converts their car to get 100 mpg now, is just skipping the industry future plans of ripping off people. same idea with cell phones) Now if people realize this, we can win a huge lawsuit from google/carriers (or carmakers) to stop the ripping off and come out with the best product now instead of wasting energy of creating the "ok" product and force them to build the "great" product.

Except, um, Google already DID, block the downloading of tethering Apps for verizon and at&t. Question above would they do that with sprint.

Good news now is that there is legal action on what they are trying to do, so that would probably hold up sprint from doing anything right now.

1) You need to root your phone. If you have not done this, please go HERE
- This is not the place to discuss if you are having issues rooting. The only reason root is mentioned is because its necessary to make wireless tether work.
2) Go HERE to download the apk to your phone. Typically people download the top one as that's the newest release.
3) Once the APK downloads click it and it will install. If you get a warning about un-verified apps click settings and allow for unverified apps to load. Now click it and it will work
4) Open wireless tether, click menu on your phone and go through the settings.
5) Once your all setup, have fun

FAQs:
-Yes this will work on a custom rom
-Yes this will work on the stock rom with the OTA installed but you still need root.

Troubleshooting (in this order):
-Did you download the version from the market? Uninstall, go to the link in step 2 above, and download from there.
-Reinstall the binary and config. Open wireless tether app and Menu > Settings > Menu > re-install binary/config
-Make sure you don't have wireless tether set to shut off when your screen turns off. Launch wireless tether, Menu > settings > Check mark "disable wake-lock"
-Have you tried switching to a clean channel? Download wifi analyzer from the market and find a clean channel in the area you are going to be working. Inside on wireless tether, set it to use that channel. Launch wireless tether app and Menu > Settings > channel.

I have absolutely no affiliation with any of the work above. All thanks should go to those Dev's. Also, please consider donating to the Dev's who spent their time hooking us up. More information on the project can be found on their google code site.
Is there a difference between this version and Wireless Tether which is in the market? I'm asking because the ONLY difference I see is the icon you tap to turn it on. Wirelss Tether is Green, while WiFi Tether is yellow. Every other setting and gui is identical.

Hi, glad to see you got rooted! :)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Wireless Tether app but there is an app that came on Sprint Lovers when I flashed called Wi-fi Hotspot. That is the one I use and it works great. Just tap it to open, then tap again to turn it on.

Oh, you probably already know this but when you first open it make sure you accept superuser permissions.

I have this problem, but the superuser permissions never shows up so that I can allow it.

Make sure you are entering in the password correctly, it will be CAPS sensitive. If you think it is correct, try a really simple password to ensure it's not mistyped. My connection is encrypted and I have no problems.

Hope this helps.

Maybe a dumb question, but is this wireless or do you have to be connected through USB? I downloaded on my rooted Epic 4G Touch, but no devices can find it when searching for a wifi connection.

This may be an odd request but I rooted my EVO so I could wirelessly testher my View. I was also able to wirelessly connect my laptop. Previously I was using EasyTether to tether my laptop and sometimes I need to do that with a desktop computer that doesn't have WiFi. Problem is that now it seems like the wired tethering through EasyTether no longer works. Is that a known issue? Or do I have something else going on?
