Friend's i7 tablet -- root Froyo or no?

I am a complete n00b to Android and will be using only Linux to root and do other tasks necessary to accomplish the below:

A friend bought the cheapest tablet he could afford and wants me to make it usable as a device to view NFL games on over the internet using his Galaxy S2 as a hotspot. It's an Impression 7" tablet with Froyo, I am told.

Is it doable? If so, please tell how!
