And he's Concerned about battery life. I know it doesn't have the best battery life by any means, but once the newest update hit it (5.1?) has it gotten any better?

Buy a quick charger and you don't have to worry too much of its weak battery life.

No, the 5.1 update did not significantly improve battery life.
 
No it didn't improve it. Quick charge is great but your battery will die within 12 months and it's not removable.

Mine made it 10 months. I just got a new warrantied phone today.

Answer to exactly what you asked. A quick charger is needed because battery life isn't good.

As always it depends how much you use your phone throughout a typical day, and what you use it for. I'm not a heavy user and it gets me through the day on most occasions. If I make lots of calls or do lots of surfing it will be a close call. So it really depends on your friends usage habits
