From BB to Incredible (Have issues, need help, advice)

Very happy so far

I made the jump from the Storm2 => Incredible and couldn't be happier. The hardest part for me was I sold my Storm2 two weeks before the Incredible came out and I had to use my low end backup phone. I am using AppBrain.com to access the Android store from my computer. Lots of good free apps, but sort of tough to sort the way I want.

under your messaging options, there's something called Delivery Reports. Make sure that is checked, and you'll get a little envelope next to each message when it goes through, just like the "D" when sending a text to another verizon phone.

I went from the Storm to the Incredible and am so happy. I do not miss my Storm at all! It has taken some getting use to but I love this phone and Android.

Anyone found any luck with syncing with Exchange and having the ability to remote wipe the device? Any third party apps I should look into to make sure that the device is secure for corporate email?

Touchdown works very well.

New convert from the Storm -- my Incredible should arrive tomorrow. I recognize a lot of the handles here from Crackberry.

Can anyone recommend an app that plays 8khz mono wav files?

i cant wait to ditch my curve and go with the EVO, i think the only thing i will miss about my bb is the messenger just because i use it more then straight text messages. come on EVO everyday i use this blackberry the closer i come to launching it into the toilet

Rim

someone at RIM should really read this thread. what i see here is a tiny reflection of what is actually happening on a much larger scale. i'm one of the many that just switched from blackberry to android. and i was as loyal to BB as anyone has ever been. in fact, i won't even speak negatively here about what i think is wrong with RIM. all i'll say is, after reading this thread, theres a huge population, including myself, that really stuck it out, kept waiting didn't WANT to switch. i feel like RIM is almost forcing people out, nothing new at all for years other than hardware "upgrades". but yeah, it's sad to see so many people that loved a platform feel like they HAVE to change. but hey, i do love my nexus one a lot.

I think what happened is RIM got caught up in this technology movement so to speak, but is having a hard time adapting to the speed of other companys that can produce the next best thing sooner rather than later. RIM desperately wants to make a "rock solid" phone thats very secure, and while the fad was BB for awhile, I see more people coming to android and iphone type of devices every day. They can't want for RIM to design a rock solid phone with features and ease of use like that of the android system 2 years after android has already done it.

Sounds like you need QuickPull, saved frustration for millions of BB owners. I'm a former 8330 guy also. The DI has it's glitches too but I think most of them will be worked out with software updates. Pretty much to be expected with a new release phone of any brand running any OS.

The potential of this phone and platform are so beyond BB it's almost scary. BB's notifications still rule though. And I miss the beacon for an LED. Other than that, not missing much.

Good to know. :) Thanks for posting. I just ordered mine last night. Can't wait! Although I think I'm going to have to... at least until June 2nd. :-/

Also, I've used BBM I think... 3 times in the last 2 years with my BlackBerry... ain't gonna miss it.

The notifications are unified mail boxes are going to be the hardest thing for me to adjust to. But I'll get over it I'm pretty sure and its more than worth the payoff of many more apps and a lot more power. :)

After reading through this thread I am not ashamed to say I ordered my Droid Inc last night...Of course now I cant wait to get my hands on it. Coming from 8330. I work at a place where Tech is everywhere and many others have Droids. This is going to be fun.

Gotta call you on this one.

Android is NOT Java based. It is a riff on Linux (currently using kernel 2.6.29), and is written in C compiled to ARM native machine code. While you can write apps in Java (using Goole's managed code libraries) the OS itself is not Java.

My bad, I was misinformed then. Good to know! I gotta say I love my HTC Incredible.

Things I miss from my Storm2 are:
- Lack of copy/paste functionality on native mail clients;
- No native Exchange Tasks support;
- No support for magnet/holster mode;
- No native current apps switcher (installed Task Tray);
- Battery life (My Storm2 would last me through the day with moderate usage, my Incredible does not);
- SocialScope (yes I know FriendStream does the same thing but it's not as good);
- PodTrapper (I have DoggCatcher on my Incredible which doesn't feel as polished or maybe I'm just not used to DoggCatcher's GUI yet)
- BeejiveIM (is there a multi-IM app as good as BeejiveIM on the Android platform? I haven't found one yet...)
- Notifications (Sometimes Skype will notify me of a new message 30 minutes too late... very annoying. The Storm2 never had notification latency issues);
- No way to sort your apps into folders (using App Organizer to compensate but native integration would be best)
- Mango (Is there anything as good as the Mango BlackBerry app on Android? I tried Manga browser but I'm not impressed due to lack of pinch to zoom functionality).

Long list but other than the lack of magnet/holster mode which can drive me nuts at times, I have had a very positive experience so far. I'm sure most of the shortcomings I came across will/can be resolved through apps and/or new Android updates (can't wait to see what Froyo will bring to the table).

I don't miss my Storm at all actually. BB might be slightly better at DELIVERING email but that's about it. Anybody else miss "message truncated" or "press down to display more text" or something like that or "unable to display message"??? I don't think so. Or how about all of us enabling picture / html display in email settings and regardless of that RIM's stupid JAVA based OS not following those settings and forcing users to have to click and ask for "get images"???

I don't miss any of that crap.

There's copy/paste in native email - what exactly areyou talking about?

You are right. There is copy/paste for my Exchange mailbox but not for the Gmail app... Unless I don't get how it works, but I can't copy anything out of the Gmail client other than links. I wanted to copy a USPS tracking number out of an email earlier and I ended up forwarding the email to my corporate email so I could copy and paste from there.

Hold the Home button, it will bring up your current/recent apps

Holding the Home button only shows the last 6 opened apps, not all the apps currently running on your phone. Task Tray is an app that shows all the running apps in the same fashion the iPhone OS 4.0 does. It's currently in beta but works pretty well. You can learn more about it HERE.

My gripe is that Android OS does not natively support this functionality.

if you want to see your running apps natively on android, go to settings, apps, applications, then hit menu button, filter, show running. that at least shows you what apps are currently running on your phone.

Considering Switch from a Tour

I've been compiling a list of questions, because I've been thinking about siwtching - I know some of these may have been answered in this thread, I've been reading it for the last hour or so and doing some quick searches, but hopefully getting the rest of the answers might sway me. I'll preface this by saying I'm an Apple guy who hates the iPhone, and a Blackberry guy who loves his Tour, but still thinks its missing *something* - even moreso after messing with an Incredible today...

1) If I logged into the BIS, I could set up filters for my specific mail accounts, so certain emails I just wouldn’t get on my BB, only on my Laptop email client. Is that do-able?

2) I currently have multiple email accounts set up. One of them I use for purchases, it keeps the spam and unwanted mail to a minimum. I have the account set up on my blackberry, but thanks to a program called BerryBuzz, I don’t get notifications when emails come in, but I know there are there for me to check when I want – is there a similar option for Android? (Hiding and not being notified of a sppecigic email account, yet not having to delete it off the phone (that was how I did it on my iPhone). - Looks like there's a few options out there in the App world, just gotta find one that I like..

3) I can access my work email on my BB by setting up the OWA address in the BIS. Is that possible with Android or would I have to use the Web browser to access OWA? - Found the answer to this... I should be OK..

4) For as weak as the BB Browser is, the main thing I use it for – and where I think it excels is its handling of Google Reader (RSS). Being a Google Phone, is there a dedicated Google Reader app?

5) I’ve seen a few mentions of being able to dial-out via Google Voice. I have a GV Account, does “dialing out” mean that I can make calls from that specific GV number natively or will the calls still show up with my primary Verizon # as my caller ID?

I think that’s all.. for now. I may come up with more, but definitive answers to these questions would help me decide if I should switch or hold out for the 9650 Bold.

EDIT: None of my local VZW Stores have it in stock, so I ordered online.. Figure I have about 2 weeks to do research and decide before I get it and then 14 days to play around with it..

I went from Storm1 > HTC_INC, its like night and day. I think its ridiculous how fast big red tried to push the BB Storm out the door before xmas, when clearly the phone wasn't show ready (remember the early reviews..IPhone killer, yea right!!). Even after many software upgrades I would see at least one software exception per day on the screen, and needed at least 1 batter pull per day. I don't care if the battery is a little weak with the INC, atleast the phone works when I need it too without the sluggishness! The OS is fantastic on the INC...I don't miss anything from the Storm.
