Installing the 2.2 Update Without Rooting

For the non-tech savvy Dinc users, I offer the following information to upgrade to 2.2 without all this rooting and un-rooting stuff (which is above my head). I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post or if this is just too simple for the advance Android users.

I have a stock Dinc purchased in June, 2010 with 2.1. Last night I installed this file on an old XP laptop I have:

RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.21.605.1_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.50_PRL58006_release_143351_signed.exe

You can find this file in several of the various Android forums on the web. I did not want to put the actual link here because I don?t know how to give proper credit to the creator of this file. It is an ".exe" file. I just downloaded the file and saved it to my XP's desktop. I also had to download and install HTC's sync software (the same software you use to sync calendar and contact data from your PC to the Dinc). I saw in various forums that upgrading the Dinc from 2.1 to 2.2 using this ?.exe? file works on XP machines so I did not try this with my regular WIN 7 machine.
You then connect the Dinc to the XP with the regular usb cable. Give it a few moments to recognize the Dinc. I cannot remember if I set the Dinc up as just a ?disk drive? or as a "regular sync" connection (sorry, it was 3 in the morning). Then I ran the ".exe" file like any other ".exe" file from the XP desktop and the install was under way. For me, time to go from 2.1 to 2.2 was about 5 minutes. The phone was wiped clean during the process. I lost my contacts, apps, etc. However, my 2 gig SD was not erased and my 4 gig of MP3's on the phone itself before starting the upgrade were still there after the install! I now have 2.2 on my phone and it survived just fine. Naturally I was a bit nervous but this process worked for me. I now have all the new goodies on my Dinc (for me the screaming Wi-Fi is the best).
DISCLAIMER: Proceed at your own risk. This operation worked for me and I decided to do it instead of waiting for the OTA. I have no idea what will happen when Verizon dumps 2.2 to my phone. I'll let you know if and when that happens. I am very new to Android and just took a leap of faith and it worked for me. I now have all the features of 2.2 that Verizon lists on its website and I'm happy with the result. I am just sharing my experience to see if someone wants to give it a try. Good luck.

Ummm yeah, thanks for the information but this has already been passed along. The RUU will also erase everything on your phone, where as the OTA update doesn't. Most people don't want that.

Roger. I just didn't see these specific instructions and I read every page of this thread. I think the "power users" just know how to run an ".exe" without any help.

By the way, I don't know how my 4 gigs of MP3s survived the wipe but I'm glad they did!!

Nobody knows how to run an .exe? lol. The erasing of "everything" means settings, account setup, email options, contacts, sms, mms, etc etc. It doesn't touch your music, video's etc.

So Qazme, maybe you know this answer to this..

Is the RUU file the same as the OTA?

I downloaded it the other night and everything is great, but I'm wondering if I should just S-Off the phone, go back to 2.1, then do the OTA...

Sorry if that's a stupid question

It's exactly the same as the OTA. So if you are happy I would stay. BTW you have to root the phone to s-off it.

Yes, I know I have to root it. I used to tinker with my Blackberry, so I'm okay with that, so long as I read the instructions..

For now though, I'll stick with the RUU. Thanks for the quick reply!

No problem. And this, that I bolded, will save you and others a lot of headache, heartache, and frustrations........

Hehe, yes, from what I've read people aren't too patient and have problems as a result. These Droid phones aren't Blackberries, you have to take care of them! ;)

Instructions? We don't need no stinking instructions!

Just kidding, folks. Like Qasme says, if you read, you won't bleed.

Sorry, I'm trying to read through all the pages here. Do I need to be stock in order to run the RUU or will it work otherwise. I know there are instructions to run it and maintain root, but I would like to run it in order to be completely stock on the 2.2 update. I am currently rooted, on a 2.05 radio and running skyraider. Can I just hit the exe file and plug my phone in and update?

Didn't see it posted through the other 28 pages of posts....

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. Could not get HTC Sync (newest version) to work, or the RUU to install. Kept getting a comunication error. I ran the RUU again in XP SP3 compatibility mode and worked right away. Haven't tried it with HTC Sync yet.(I don't use HTC, just for this issue I DL it)

you are a day late and a dollar short. :) We know all about it. :):):)

Alright, I updated with the RUU, using MyBackUp to save all my data and apps, and I now have every thing up and running, but for some reason not all my apps are showing up on my market downloads list. They are all on the phone and are working, but they wont show up on the list, even after re starts.

Ok, I just went through all my apps in the market, and reinstalled them, and now they are all on my download list.

I had a 2.15 radio, rooted, unrevokedforever, and Thirdwave custom ROM.. I ran the RUU over it and it worked. I did have problems with the RUU on my Win7 x64, so did it in a XP machine.
