Installing the 2.2 Update Without Rooting
For the non-tech savvy Dinc users, I offer the following information to upgrade to 2.2 without all this rooting and un-rooting stuff (which is above my head). I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post or if this is just too simple for the advance Android users.
I have a stock Dinc purchased in June, 2010 with 2.1. Last night I installed this file on an old XP laptop I have:
RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.21.605.1_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.50_PRL58006_release_143351_signed.exe
You can find this file in several of the various Android forums on the web. I did not want to put the actual link here because I don?t know how to give proper credit to the creator of this file. It is an ".exe" file. I just downloaded the file and saved it to my XP's desktop. I also had to download and install HTC's sync software (the same software you use to sync calendar and contact data from your PC to the Dinc). I saw in various forums that upgrading the Dinc from 2.1 to 2.2 using this ?.exe? file works on XP machines so I did not try this with my regular WIN 7 machine.
You then connect the Dinc to the XP with the regular usb cable. Give it a few moments to recognize the Dinc. I cannot remember if I set the Dinc up as just a ?disk drive? or as a "regular sync" connection (sorry, it was 3 in the morning). Then I ran the ".exe" file like any other ".exe" file from the XP desktop and the install was under way. For me, time to go from 2.1 to 2.2 was about 5 minutes. The phone was wiped clean during the process. I lost my contacts, apps, etc. However, my 2 gig SD was not erased and my 4 gig of MP3's on the phone itself before starting the upgrade were still there after the install! I now have 2.2 on my phone and it survived just fine. Naturally I was a bit nervous but this process worked for me. I now have all the new goodies on my Dinc (for me the screaming Wi-Fi is the best).
DISCLAIMER: Proceed at your own risk. This operation worked for me and I decided to do it instead of waiting for the OTA. I have no idea what will happen when Verizon dumps 2.2 to my phone. I'll let you know if and when that happens. I am very new to Android and just took a leap of faith and it worked for me. I now have all the features of 2.2 that Verizon lists on its website and I'm happy with the result. I am just sharing my experience to see if someone wants to give it a try. Good luck.
