Frustrated with Charging the HTC One in the Car

I own the HTC One 2013 for almost a year now.
It seems that starting the 4.4.2 update something went wrong, maybe in the background services of Google.
I've always used agood charger, I always use the same apps and I even use rooted S-Off device with a kernel supporting the quick charge, but still the battery drains while charging and navigating.
To compare, my wife's Samsung S2 with still Android 4.2 if I'm not mistaken, is using the same charger with the same driving setup of Waze and such and it charges great!

After being sure my charger is ok, I went over and put the phone in power save mode for the drive time.
It helped me gain about 7% in 40 minutes ride.

Yet as I see it, this is a workaround and not solution itself.

One thing might be noted is the vzw model does not have power saver mode, or I have overlooled as to where it is.

I'm on international device but according to what I read across the forums you're correct, unfortunately.

I'm happy to report that HTC has indeed resolved these issues on the M8. I just got the M8 today, and as an experiment I drove for an hour with navigation on, as well as a YouTube video playing with the screen left on the entire time. The phone was plugged into a 1 amp charger.

The M7 would have lost charge and possibly overheated. However, the M8 actually gained about 15% during the hour. I suspect it would have done even better with a more powerful charger.

Good to know. I custom kernel mine as of awhile ago and have a good setup. I don't run into drain or overheat issues anymore when needing to use lots of apps and GPS. It sucks that I have to resort to that and stock never cut it for me. Mine charges better as well. Thanks for that update on the M8.

Touchdown!

Happy to hear the news on the M8. The heat problem was something I need to know was resolved before I start to consider the HTC One. Please keep us posted on the phone's performance as you continue to break it in.

Also: is there a "knock off" option for the phone, or is the power button required to turn the screen off?

If you change your kernel you can do this already.

I'm a current BlackBerry user, and only now finding my way around Android, via the LG G2 I picked up for my wife. So as a neophyte Android convert I don't plan to do any modding in the near term, though I will keep the option in mind....thanks. Not having the "knock off" feature to correspond with "knock on" seems like an oversight...

Yeah my bad. Interpreted it wrong anyway :P
I was referring to the tap to wake and holding the HTC logo to also turn it on and off. It's convenient not having to hit the power button on top.

I really only have two complaints with the M8, and you mention one of them. It really needs to be able to "knock off" since the button is a little awkward to reach with my right hand. On the M7, my index finger on my right hand kind of gravitated to the on/off button.

The other issue is that I really want to be able to keep the ringtone volume locked so that the volume rocker only controls media. This isn't a M8 problem, though. I believe it's an Android issue. I had CM on my M7 and it allowed me to disassociate the rocker buttons from the ringtone.

But those are rather minor issues outweighed by everything else. I'm finding the battery life to be amazing.

I charged the M8 overnight and began the day with it at about 8:30 AM. I did not charge it once all day until about 15 minutes ago when it was at 6%. So it lasted about 15.5 hours without a charge (and probably would have died around 16 hours).

I got moderate to heavy use out of it: I used GPS navigation for about 1 hour, and simultaneously listened to an hour long podcast (streaming, not pre-downloaded). During these periods, it was connected to my car via bluetooth. I also downloaded 1.2 Gigs worth of apps over my cellular network, watched a little bit of Netflix, listened to music for at least an hour, spoke for about an hour on the phone (multiple calls), set up the TV remote, and in general had several hours of screen time. My M7 would not have lasted half that long. The battery on the M8 has surpassed my expectations.

I will tell them TJGartner sent me when I go to pick up my M8!

Thanks for the real world info, much appreciated.

Glad to be of help. By the way, I just installed an app called "Knock Lock," which solves the problem of having to push the button to lock the screen. It works great (so far, at least).

Now, if I could only find an app that would disassociate the ringtone volume from the volume rocker ... it would be like Christmas in April. :)
