Full Pixel reviews coming?

Re: Ars Technical did NOT think too highly of the Pixel 3 - extensive review

Too be honest I could not make it through the entire article. While he has some ligitimate complaints he kept kicking the dead horse. It was obvious that a couple of things about the phone hit is hot buttons. After that there was nothing the phone could do right to salavage it in his opinion.

I agree completly that Google should have done better with the notch, forehead, and chin. However there is more to a phone that just those items. I also think the phone is a bit expensive for what you get. But to bring up the lack of SD card support? That went out the window 3 years ago and is not coming back. I would love to have an SD slot but that ship has sailed so get over it. I am surprised he did not bring up the lack of a user replaclable battery.

I can't comment on the feel, glass back, etc as I have yet to receive my 3 XL.

Actually, that went out the window 7 years ago. The Nexus 1 released in 2010 was the only Google phone with expandable storage. Starting the next year with the Nexus S, they dropped expandable storage going forward for both phones and tablets. Ironically, the Nexus S was made by Samsung, one of the few OEMs that still has expandable storage.

"If all software was equal, no one would pick the Pixel design out of a lineup."

Tough, but fair.

From the back, I think people would. From the front, probably not so much.

Haven't read the whole thing, but I'm starting to wonder about Ron. He's been a little out of control lately.

I haven't followed ars a ton over the years, but I will say that every time I've read an article on there I haven't been all that impressed. Not just referring to articles realted to Google products either.

Yeah, their scope of work is a bit more science and technology and the forum members are a bit more "sophisticated", I think.

Regarding Ron's work specifically, he covers our area of interest, mainly Google/Android, and generally he's good. But man, he has a propensity to get to into his feelings sometimes, more so as of late. Like if he's butthurt about something, he allows that to flow into his writing.

He means design inside and out, not just looks. Imagine the choice of every current phone hardware with the Google/Pixel OS, optimization and updates etc. E.g. my guess is a Note 9 w/Pixel OS would pretty much cripple Pixel 3XL sales.

I didn't get that from his review at all. The "bad" for him was mainly aesthetics, not functionality. The one caveat that is poor on the 3 XL's design is the notch and not being able to see all information in the notification bar with everything on. That's a legitimate criticism.

Gizmodo seems to show a screen difference between the 3 and 3xl that no one else mentions.

Yes. And if you hold the two phones side by side and look at the same images, you will also see that the smaller 3 has slightly higher contrast and a higher red cast (more noticeable on skin tones). Not garish by any means, it's still a great display and side by side someone might argue that the XL by comparison looks washed out or is too low in contrast (though it's not). However, all things being equal (both set to adaptive display, same brightness etc.), the output is not the same.

I plan to experiment with the option to hide the notch and make the screen look exactly like the screen on my Pixel 2 XL. I've never had any problems looking at my 2 XL screen and I've never had any problem with reading notifications.

Rene is back with his yearly scare tactics and FUD. Damn he so insecure and scared people going to switch away from iPhone to Pixel? Pixel is still a niche market and no where near Samsung or apple, not sure why he is so bent up

Surprised it took him this long. I was looking for this piece from him to be literally right after the live event back on the 9th.
