Future of Android 3d Gaming is a better GPU worth it?

Hey all, so I wanted to get an Evo, but then I saw all these graphic tests and found The EPIC to have amazing GPU. Now I really like the evo for htc sense, bigger screen and looks. But I want the epic for its GPU. I dont care much for the keyboard.

Should I get the epic just for the GPU? Do you guys even see android gaming taking off and using the epic's internals or will the GPU of EVO(Adreno 200) be fine for current and future android games. As I see it, most devs are using the N1 to develop on, so im guessing the GPU in the evo should be fine right?

or should I be safe and get the Epic GPU and be able to use the keyboard for gaming, but not be satisfied by looks? (maybe when i use it in person ill fine in love with the looks lol)

SHORT VERSION Should i get the EVO and not be worried about highend 3d games sucking/being laggy? Is the GPU on the Evo good enough because it is the current standard for 3d games? Dont most developers develop on n1, thus the Evo gpu will be perfect? Also I think A lot of developers are optimizing games for the snapdragons. is any of this true?

Right now it's hard to say. You are right, snapdragon does have a pretty weak gpu which is about 1/5-1/4 as powerful as the galaxy s phone's powervr 540. However right now gaming on android is a little sad from what I understand and the snapdragon is still pretty good. However at least when it comes to the emulators we have, it seems that there are lag issues on snapdragon, so if you want to use a psx emulator or something, the epic 4g might be better just because it can play more games there, and it definitely adds in security in power for a while.

Android gaming might also really take off if sony uses android or something for the next psp. It would allow them to compete with apple and the iphone better in the portable gaming market after all. However the rumor is kind of weak given that they are talking about using snapdragon for it. However if they used a new dual core snapdragon then that might be viable. This is still just a rumor though.

I'd get the epic 4g just to be safe, so long as you don't mind the slightly smaller screen and added thickness.

I really wanna go the safe route. Incase u wondering why i put this thread up is because my cousin has a moment and it cnat even run any 3d games. my pre, which is older, can run 3d games beautifully. This is what i fear most about android, is the fragmentation. I wanna go the safe route just incase.

And yes, it would be sick if psp development came on android, it would be perfect for me. Honestly, I own a psp and i never use it because i dont take it with me anywhere. in this day and age, most people just take their phone with them everywhere they go and can thus use the games whenever they want.

Yeah, I hear ya. PSP development would really be sweet and old android phones do have some serious issues. I needed a temporary phone for this month while waiting for the epic 4g, so I got a tmobile g1 and put it on a $15 unlimited txting plan on tmobile, and this phone can't do ****. It is on CM6 RC3, so it is running froyo, and I even turned on the JIT, and yet it takes me 10 seconds to go from the home screen to reading a txt msg, and youtube videos, it can barely handle 260p stuff. It's really really sad. My 2 yr old iPod touch puts it to shame. I just pray the epic 4g really is as awesome as I am hoping it will be.

The Evo couldn't even play a regular 2d air hockey game for me. Somehow, I think the standard is more TI OMAP right now.

I'd say the Epic. It looks a tad bit sleeker IMO. The front of the EVO looks really good though.

Epic isn't really what i would call sleek haha...no offense to anyone who likes it, i think it looks pretty ugly...but its the inside that counts.

If you are a big mobile gamer, get the Epic.

Different Folks, Different Strokes I guess

Personally I think the Epic looks much better than the EVO and one of my favorite things about the look of it is the 4 buttons on the front that are completely hidden until you the touch the phone.

With that said the Epic will most likely be better for gaming in the long haul since the GPU is much better than the one found in the Evo

Your opinion, I think it looks awesome and I think the EVO looks kinda ugly on the back.

I like the look of the Epic better. I could have bit on the Evo on release and didn't just cause of that little something that I couldn't explain. It just felt too much like a bigger badder (in a good way) Hero... which i've grown to dislike cause it just doesn't do graphics well. Its probably my only gripe since I can get about 2 days battery on it now with the latest release of 2.2. I honestly can say the biggest selling factor of the Epic to me is the GPU. Seeing what a Captivate did to an N1 running 2.2 in the GL Benchmark was just nauseating for Snapdragon owners. N1 can have their linpack and Quadrant scores... I'll gladly hold the best graphics GPU on a mobile device.

Im currently playing 3 gameloft games. Hero of sparta, dungeon hunter and asphalt. They all run a little choppy when they play the intros to the next level. But gameplay they are fine but not as fluid. However, im running ava 2.2 rom and using netarchy kernel to uncap the fps but not over clocked. Running psx4droid games becomes slow most of the time. The epic will run these games a lot smoother. I've seen some videos on youtube. And epic is not even on froyo yet. Imagine when it is. Im a gamer so I will be picking up the epic just because of the better gpu. I will miss the kick stand on the Evo though. Its great for watching movies and streaming videos.
