G4 worth $325?

It all seemed great until I saw the V10 for 50 bucks through Best Buy/Verizon. I'd have to halve my data plan to match my TMO price, but the phone deal is too good. Or if not the V10, the G4 is a buck. Too good to be true? Or is it?

The real nutty thing is how the prices seem to be dropping daily as each carrier is trying to pick off the other's customers.

T-Mobile has $100 off the V10 for cyber Monday bringing it down to $499. Not bad on monthly installments.

Of course only paying $50 is nice also but I wouldn't want to go back to contracts.

The contract is the big hurdle for me too. Still, it's not like I'm spending a ton, and I can sell the phone easily enough if I hate it and get a moto g or something that won't break the bank to ride it out with.

Tbh, T-Mobile still has you locked in like a contract while you make payments. You still have to pay a large chunk to leave them just like breaking a contract. When you break a contract with the others and pay the fee, you get to keep that phone just like with T-Mobile. They ain't fooling me. My bill jumped from $150/month to almost $300/ month with our 3 payments and no more contacts.

I agree...there may be no "service" contract, but TMobile generally has high phone costs. So unless you bring your own unlocked device, you're just as stuck until you pay it off.

High phone costs? The phone cost is the same from any carrier. They take the retail value of the phone and spread it out over 24 months -- Not sure how T-Mobile is doing it different?

Depends on your timing, rebates, and freebies at the time. TMO dropped their G4 price down to $400, but none of the other carriers did, so they look like the best option now. Unless you grabbed it when they were offering another 75 off, that is.

The v10s a beast but there's no way I'd pay twice as much for it. The g4 is a steal at $325.

That $325 deal is over for now. Plus, I really like the fingerprint reader in my Samsung S2 tablet, and I don't want to buy a phone without that feature. With the V10, I just didn't want something that BIG. I like everything about it, except the size. I saw someone with an Iphone 6s Plus on the train today, and it looks like a tablet. The V10 is even bigger than that. I've already got an 8" tablet for home use, and I don't need a nearly 6" tablet for the street. Also, knowing that they put the higher end audio in to the V10, along with the second screen (which probably can be implemented better) makes me want to wait and see if they decide to put all this goodness in to a smaller phone next year. They can't keep getting bigger, and they are going to have to do more things differently if they want people to upgrade or attract new buyers who don't want mega-phones.

This is just my personal opinion. Don't do it.

I bought the LG G4 from Verizon. The final price was cheaper than free. This was due to Verizon's $100-off sale, a $300 trade-in on a $7 smartphone, plus the $200 LG $200 rebate Visa card offer.... I essentially got $600 back.

After a month of use, I cannot in good conscience recommend the LG G4 to my friends/family. (even considering that it was basically free to me)

My reasons are as follows: (most are direct comparison between my G4 and my Note 5 and the iPhone 6s Plus)

(1) screen has terrible viewing angle
(2) auto-brightness too dim (but can be solved by installing 3rd party apps)
(3) no "smart stay" so screen goes off every 30 seconds
(4) leather back looks/feels great, but after two days I forgot about it... so it was just a gimmick to me
(5) even with last weeks' OTA update, the phone gets warm too easily
(6) battery life isn't not that great
(7) no quick charging
(8) no built-in wireless charging
(9) curved screen is pointless (at least I can't figure out what the point is)
(10) camera not as good in low-light as those other two flagship phones(Note 5, iPhone 6s Plus)
(11) horrible resale value (worse yet, even Gazelle refuses to buy any G4 as trade-in)
(12) no physical home button... on-screen home button takes up screen real estate
(13) placement volume buttons sometimes causes me to rub the camera lens (even after a month of use)


Having said all that, I must also list what I do like about the G4: (some of which contradict what I said above ) Unfortunately, the things that I dislike outweigh the thing that I like about the G4 a lot more.

(A) knock-knock feature is awesome
(B) MicroSD card slot
(C) removable battery (duh!)
(D) nice build quality
(E) good rear camera (except in low-light)
(F) great front-facing camera (much better than my Note 5 and iPhone 6s Plus)
(G) no power and volume buttons on the side makes it a joy to hold in any position
(H) rear camera focus very quickly thanks to the laser focus
(I) IR remote function
(J) very snappy performance
(K) rear speaker loud and clear (again, much better than Note 5 and iPhone 6s)
(L) no Verizon logo on the front and back of the phone. (extremely rare these days)
(M) Verizon version can use AT&T SIM card to pick up AT&T 4G LTE signal, at over 15mbps download
(N) very few bloatware
(O) still uses Micro SIM card... (I hate nano SIM cards)

Good price. Fwiw, LGs don't seem to hold resale value over time compared to other brands, imo anyway. That may or may not bear on your decision, just sayin'. Still, a good price today.

My Verizon Note 5 32gb has a trade in value of $413 as of yesterday. By comparison, my LG G4 has a trade in value of $99.

I'd take an unlocked one for 100 bucks in a heartbeat...but that's the price the reseller will pay for it, not where they can resell it.
