G5 owners - happy or not?

I am seeing a lot of negativity about the G5 - maybe just that it's often the people having a bad experience post on forums, and those who are happy are busy playing with their phone. Or maybe there is a QA problem. Or maybe this phone is really a "love it" or "hate it" thing. G5 owners, what's your experience?

I have a Verizon silver G5, and am very happy with it. I am coming from a three year old S4, so I have not used any recent flagship phones, so maybe that colors my perception a bit. The chin fits flush, no scratches or cosmetic damage, and the screen (to me) is bright and beautiful, no easily apparent bleed. It feels good in my hand. I will certainly be keeping it.

I know others are having a bad experience - how's your G5?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "love it or hate it", for some reason I don't think there seems to be a lot of middle ground with this phone. I personally am enjoying it, more so than the S7 I carried for a couple of weeks.

I went to the store today to check out the G5 and I really liked it. I plan to upgrade this weekend.

So far I like it. I've had none of the problems of others so far. I have seen a lot of people complaining about the lack of an app drawer, but personally I like this approach better. I always hated that I couldn't filter my app drawer beyond a few predefined folders. This approach lets me organize my apps into custom folders and not have to flip through several pages of apps to find the one I need.

I ordered the G5 online through tmobile jump. It arrives on the 5th. After these post from people freaking out I went to tmobile to see one first hand.

Looked over the gold G5 they had on display. My initial thought was it looked good to me and felt fine in hand. Didn't turn it on because they had just unbound it earlier.

So, I'm not to concern with the appearance or build quality at this point. As long as the screen does not bleed through I will use it until my next jump.

Sounds like you got a good one! I am disappointed with mine, so much so that I'm returning it. I was happy with the back material, and there was no dents (though there was a very faint band from the camera to the side, it didn't bother me though). I found the bottom usb port a little sharp and cheap feeling (I rest phones on my little finger when I hold them), again a little annoying but not a deal breaker. Mine had sizable gaps on the chin on both sides. That did annoy me, mostly because I was worried about stuff getting inside easier. But the biggest issue was the backlight bleed. Mine had it terribly, even in a well lit room and 50% brightness. I knew it would drive me nuts. I am very gutted as I genuinely like the phone and had previously cancelled the s7 edge preorder for it. I know there are always dud phones of every brand but there seems to be a higher rate with the G5 so I'm nervous about getting a replacement and will probably look elsewhere. But I'm happy that there are those who got solid ones! I am envious!

I'm happy myself. Yeah, the battery is a bit small, but it's also too early to really judge that. I personally don't mind that it's more plastic (a huge point of contention right now) because it makes the phone much lighter, but still has that metal look and feel. The cameras are good enough for me, the screen is bright and colorful, and the phone itself is really snappy and quick to respond.

I didn't like the UX 5.0, but I knew I wouldn't, having come from two Nexus phones previous to this. I just installed the Google Now launcher and I'm happy with that.

I probably won't use the modules at all. That wasn't a selling point to me (although the removable battery is a huge plus). The USB C charges very quickly, too, so as long as you have a charger in your car, home, and work, the battery life shouldn't be a huge downfall.

The fingerprint reader is very responsive, which I like since I use Android Pay quite often, and it's in the perfect position since I hold my phone with my index finger right where the sensor is naturally.

Do I think it's all that and a bag of chips? No, of course not. Many phones these days are about personal preference. The G5 is a good flagship entry, and if it interests you more than the S7, get it. If not, go with the S7. No phone is perfect, but this phone has what I look for in a smartphone, so I'm happy with it. Some people may disagree, but either they got bad units (which always happen to new devices), or they look for something different in their smartphones, which is ok.

All-in-all, it's a solid phone, and a good contender in todays markets in my opinion.

Love mine and ditched my s7e for it. Feels better in the hand, fingerprint sensor is blazing, software is on point and the build quality is excellent. Disabled the bloat, running nova and my third day in the battery life is amazing. Now if they can just get their stuff together and release the modules already...typical LG

I've had mine for a few hours now and I'm very happy. I'm not getting any light bleed at all. I think the phone feels just fine in the hand. My wife had a M7 and M8. While the material isn't as thick, I think it feels great. Thanks to the 820 and 4 gigs of ram, this phone absolutely fly's. Couldn't be happier. You would think the G5 forums were a place specifically for people to bash on the phone, and I had my reservations too. I went to T-Mobile just to see the phone and hold it, not to purchase. Totally walked out with one.

Update

I did notice a couple of pin size blemishes on the paint. One on the front removable chin and one on the back of the phone. I initially tried to rub the one on chin off and thought I made it worse by scratching it but didn't realize I had left the clear protector on. I removed the protector and the blemish was still there. I was going to live with it until I noticed a pin size hole on the top left frame. Don't know how I didn't notice it prior but I had a protective case on almost as soon as I activated it. I Verizon online and they said to swap it out at my local store which is less than a mile from me. They swapped it out and the replacement is perfect. The chin seam is more even on the new one but the old one wasn't bad.

Love this phone except losing the app drawer but I can deal with that.

If you try yours with a backlight bleed test you may see some undesirable amount at 90 or 100 percent because the bleed test uses a dark background but I don't notice any under normal usage so I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Make your own app folder!?! Instead of four dots... you can see the first four apps you add to the folder(icons you like best/apps you use most), then bury the rest in the same folder. When you open that folder... you can flip through it just like an app drawer!?!?

If yours is from T-Mobile, unlocking the bootloader and flashing any AOSP ROM when it's available will net you a Nexus 5P.

I should have been clear. The first thing I do with a phone is throw Google Now Launcher and a whole bunch of Google apps. I basically set it up like my old Nexus 5. It reminds me of that, just faster. Much faster.

I got a titanium one from Verizon. I am happy with it. I haven't noticed any of the issues I am seeing on here.

I assumed it was coated metal from the hands on previews so that wasn't an issue. I know I read at least one that said it didn't feel like metal.

Not sure what else to say, it's fast and mine doesn't have any build issues that I have noticed, even after the power of suggestion from reading these forums. I haven't specifically tested for bleed but I haven't noticed anything in 3 days.

Battery life seems fine to me. It's not an OMG this is so great sort of thing but I wouldn't have guessed it is an issue for people before coming on here.

I like the whacky design. I mean, if I wanted an S7 or iPhone type design, I would have bought one of those.

I'll be honest, most of the negativity is coming from the Samsung fan boys. These forums are heavily biased towards Samsung or even Nexus to some degree. The G5 clearly is & was clearly the best phone at the MWC 2016. You should be proud & happy with your purchase, enjoy!
