Hello! I recently bought a Galaxy J7 from boost mobile, well I no longer needed the line so cancelled it and got the unlock and "mls" number from them. I have now sold the phone to my brother and we are trying to get it unlocked but when he put in the AT&T sim card it says Invalid sim. What steps do we follow from here to continue to unlock the phone?

Thank you!

Excuse my skepticism, but you probably will not get much help here since the phone sounds like it's stolen.

Welcome to Android Central! You're talking about carrier-unlocking the phone, and not unlocking the screen, right? It's possible that phone's GSM radio might not be unlockable--see Boost's unlocking policy: https://www.boostmobile.com/support/faq/phones-devices/unlocking-policy/. It specifically states, "not all Boost Mobile devices have an MSL code or a locking function that can be unlocked by Boost Mobile. And, on certain devices, not all functionality may be unlocked (e.g., for some smartphone devices, only the CDMA/voice functionality of the device may be able to be unlocked but not the GSM/UMTS/LTE portion of the device). Therefore, “unlocking” simply means using the MSL Code and bypassing the lock. Importantly, however, an unlocked device will not necessarily work or be interoperable with another carrier’s network."

Talk more with Boost to see if there is anything else you can do.

um Im not sure why you would think the phone is stolen, key words in the story are I cancelled the line, and boost gave me unlock and msl codes.. hmmm lets see you have to have account info and prove ownership over the phone before boost will give you anything... hmmm.... lol anyway! YES I am talking about unlocking it so it can go to another carrier. I have both unlock and msl codes, but the problem is when we inserted his AT&T sim it said "invalid sim". We where expecting it to just ask for the unlock code.. Anyway what leads me to beleive it can be unlocked is all the pay sites saying they can fix that error.. But then again I havent seen them mention specifically boost moble.. SO.. what would be the next step in getting it unlocked? Does it say invalid sim because of the software lock? and if so, Ive read you use the msl number to unlock a software lock, how and where do I enter the msl code? Do I have to get a program? But anyway to add onto it, Im new to the whole smart phone thing but am decent with computers. Am I wrong in thinking they are just small computers so shouldnt you be able to just wipe everything and reinstall a sock android, like formatting and putting a new version of windows on a computer?

As painful as it may be, I still think it may be worthwhile to talk to Boost about it. They might be able to explain to you whether or not that particular model can be unlocked to work with a GSM network (as opposed to Boost's CDMA network).

You can't just install any old Android firmware on a device--it has to be designed specifically for that device, since there's so much variation among Android devices. A custom firmware also requires the phone to be rooted, and not all phones have a root exploit--you can check over at xda-developers.com, which is a good resource for this kind of thing.

I've heard that many people have problems with Boost "unlocking" phones for them. Not sure if this is the case here, but I recently left Boost and will never look back
