Galaxy Nexus: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

This is an unbelievable thread. All the OP wants to know is whether there is an app or tweak to get a faster shutter speed. I would like to know also.

YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!!YES!!! All i want is there an app, not a debate.

Anyway. I know the phone will not take great pictures, i do not care if the picture is under/over exposed or noisy. I can fix that. I can not fix blurriness.

I don't know if there is an app to speed up the shutter speed. I checked some of my pictures after reading this thread and found one with a really short (fast shutter) exposure. I think the amount of light needs to be increased to get better shutter speeds. I don't know of an app that would let you do that without making the picture too dark.

Most pictures i take i get speed ~1/16 and iso 250-350, your pictures are 1/450 and iso 50. I have tried around 50 pictures in different places and all similar. What phone and os do you have? I have the VZ,ICS402 stock.

The iso being different might be part of the problem on my side.

I would rather have the camera take the pictures with your settings than mine.

This is turning more into a camera settings thread. I don't think there is a app for what were looking to do.

Iso- its automatic the higher it is the more grain in the photos but can shoot in darker areas. Lower the number the cleaner the shots.

Aperture- auto again. This creates the depth of field. Like when some areas are nice and in focus and the background is blurred out.

Shutter speed - time the shutter is open to let the proper amount of light in for the exposure. If its auto like on the phone its trying to give the best exposure for the lighting conditions. At 1/16 if not steady its going to have shake. 1/30 1/60 is quick but might not let enough light in and it might come out dark.

I took this particular picture with stock 4.0.2 as well. I am now running Axiom 2.4 Android 4.0.3.
I will try some more and see what it comes out as.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

I just took a few test pictures from inside looking out the open window.
Aperture: 2.8
Exposure time: 1-263 - 1/500
ISO: 50

Inside room:
Aperture: 2.8
Exposure time: 1/17 - 1/20
ISO: 100-125

Inside of car with 4.0.2 picture of speedometer:
Aperture: 2.8
Exposure time: 1/17
ISO: 320

Inside of car with 4.0.2:
Aperture: 2.8
Exposure time: 1/33
ISO: 64

Just showing that depending on the lighting, the ISO and exposure time DOES adjust.
Most of indoor pictures look like they are going to be 1/17 with the flash off due to the low light.
Inside pictures, no matter the light, seem to lack the clarity of the ones taken outside.

True but you sure can expect it to be a lot better than the Nexus. Yes there are worse and yes there are better. The whole "its a smartphone" argument is moot. Everyone knows it is a phone. Its primary purpose might not be for taking pictures but I bet if your data speeds were only creeping or it had a really slow CPU in it people would be complaining while others saying "its a phone get a computer if you want something better." Fact of the matter is its not just a phone anymore. Its an all in one device. People want quality in what they buy. If there is something they know out there that has better parts in it and at the same time its older than what they just bought they are going to say something about it and wonder why. Its just the way it is.

Actually for many of the problems you are mentioning I would simply not purchase the phone.

What is discussed are things not possible on a smartphone camera.

Oh and at least in my experience the Nexus does good pictures.

I own the phone and love it actually. Do I think it takes good pics, not really not indoors at least. As for good pics not being possible on a smartphone, I disagree. There are plenty of phones that do take great pictures even indoors. Either way, to each their own.

So if this is an open source code why can't it be written into a ROM to allow full manual settings?

I'm on Axiom 2.4 also by the way.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

Everything in this camera is automatic, so if you;re taking shots that cause the camera to set its shutter speed at 1/17, you're trying to pictures in an area that is not lit well enough without using a flash. If the area is well lit (outside during the day, sunny or cloudy) and your getting that shutter speed, something is wrong with your camera on that phone.

In a nutshell, that's what I have been saying. Use this phone for taking pictures on the fly and sharing them on the web. I wouldn't plan on printing any of the picture taken on a cell phone much above 5x7.
If you are going to some event like a wedding or graduation, I would take a CAMERA and leave the Nexus in your pocket.

Flash is ON and I still get 1/17.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

Flash is ON and I still get 1/17.

I just tooka picture outside about an hour ago (getting later in the day and cloudy/rainy, NO flash) and it was 1/100, just now took one of the sink in my bathroom using nothing but the overhead light (NO flash) and it was 1/33, and a final shot of the same thing with flash that was 1/50. If everything you're shooting is being taken at 1/17, your camera, or the software controlling it is messed up. If it was my phone, I'd do a factory reset (I know its a pain, but Verizon will make you do it anyway). That may fix it. If not, I'd take it back.

I just printed some shots of my kids that I took at a waterfall in 8x10 and 11x14 and they both look great. Sharp as a tack and very rich in color/detail. I think I'm going to try a 24x30 just to see what it looks like. I'm a photographer, so printing stuff is easy for me.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

One last thing OP...I am rooted and running a ROM (Axiom 2.4). I only mention this because that means I'm running Android 2.0.3. If you're not rooted, you're running Android 2.0.2. It's possible that the problem is 2.0.2 and the camera software got fixed in .3. I doubt this is the case, but hopefully, somebody that is not rooted and following this thread can check a few of their pictures to see if the shutter speed ever comes off 1/17. I think your phone is just messed up, but I also think that a hard reset might fix it. However, if your going to try a hard reset, that will completely all wipe data on your phone. That being the case, instead of hard resetting, you might want to consider unlocking the bootloader and rooting. That process includes a hard reset but you also get the benefit of then being rooted (take you about 30 minutes). If you chose to try out a ROM that had Android 2.0.3 to see if that fixes things, it would just take you another 15 minutes to flash that (my Axiom 2.4 is rock solid and very fast). Finally, if you decide to do the hard reset or the unlocking, make sure you plug in to a pc first and copy all your pictures, music and anything else you've copied or downloaded.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

it seems more like he's got some dirt on upper right corner of GNex.
thats where ambient light sensor is located. (between front facing camera and speaker)
if something is covering that part so the sensor think its dark even if it has enough light, its going to take everyshot at slow shutter speed.

since smartphone lacks aperature, and manual shutter speed setting, only way to control exposure is ISO.
u can get higher shutter speed by raising iso but it causes more noise.
so its ur choice, raise ISO with less blur but more noise or use something like stand to get less movement to get better picture.

The light setting is in the back of the main camera? Does that work?

where is a setting to raise the iso, that would work? More noise is acceptable.

well it automatically determines exposure but raising it also raise iso since aperature r fixed and shutter speed we cant control it.(and wont go beyond its limit)

make sure u cleaned both lends and upper right corner of display, and try not to move/shake phone.
some of tests I got blur pics when i clicked button so press and hold and release button helped me to get less blur pics.

Re: Any way to speed up the Camera's Shutter Speed

This morning i checked out a coworker with the verzion GN, same issue with the shutter speed. So i do not think it is phone, but software related.

Tonight, if I get time i will flash to CM9 Kangs ICS 403 rom. See if that make a difference.
