Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S3

Best Buy emailed me to say that I could pick up the S3 tomorrow. I am going to keep the Gnex and try the S3 for a few days and see if the S3 has stronger signal. The weak radio/antenna on the Gnex is the only reason I am thinking about the S3.

Anyone have any other thoughts as the S3 should be available in stores tomorrow?

I had signal problems last night, I'll keep an eye on this situation, was even worse than my nexus

I understand I am in the minority in terms of complaints over signal issues on the galaxy s3

I'm currently off contract with Verizon using a HTC Trophy the past few months. I like the Windows Phone, easy to navigate around and have been biding my time about an update waiting to see when WP8 comes out. Verizon's lack of support for windows though have gotten me thinking about Android. I've been reading up on the GS3 and really like the looks of the phone to the point I'm seriously thinking of switching to android to give it a try and see first hand if I'd like it.

Which leads me though to asking you current android users if you can give a a little comparison on the GS3 and the Nexus. I read about the Nexus running "vanilla" brand ICS and thus not using the IU skins that Samsung, HTC and others put on the phones. The Nexus running "stock" ICS sounds attractive to me coming from WP7. I use my phone a lot for work with my work Outlook mail, calendar and contacts set up on it. I utilize Skydrive to access files from my work PC on OneNote using the installed Office on WP7 which has OneNote. I use the camera on it a lot to photograph things in the shop to email to equipment service people, vendors and my projects at work. I use it of course for phone calls, texting, and some web surfing to look at news on a handful of apps I have. I'm not big into apps at all or playing games on it. I got a couple on there I mess with once in awhile if I'm waiting killing some time for some reason. I also like listening to my music that I have on it. I get my music through iTunes on my Macbook and sync the Trophy to it with Windows 7 Connector for Mac.

What I'm reading about the GS3 and all the "bloatware" software, apps and widgets on it I'm not liking. I'm really not into having a lot of that stuff on my phone for what I use my phone for. All that said, the Nexus is sounding like maybe to be the better choice for me even though it's not the latest and greatest hardware device like the GS3.

Just looking for some opinions to help me sway one way or another. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Google music on your computer will transfer all your music from iTunes. Then you can play them from the cloud or download to your phone from the cloud.

As far as pictures here is one from my phone

don;t get either phone from Verizon. They are both plagued with problems. and be forewarned..if you upgrade to the SGNSG3 you will LOSE your grandfathered data plan.
I am going on my 4th SGN from verizon now for the same problem on all phones..F' em I will send the thing back once a week until I get one that works. I will keep my unlmimted data plan. When my contract next expires I will go to sprint..I hear they take CARE of their customers.

You're right about the data plan problem, but as for the phone problem, you're either very unlucky or exaggerating (is the problem the signal issue, or something else?). I'm still on my first Galaxy Nexus and it works just fine.

I'm also on my first Gnex for December when it was first released. No issues.

I was curious if anyone knew what time frame the next "pure" google phone may be hitting the market. I have an upgrade waiting with Verizon and I thought that google usually releases their phone when they introduce a new version of the OS. Since JB is being sent out now I guess that mixes things up a bit. Do you think we can expect one by the end of the year??

Went into my local vz corporate yesterday and fussed with the gs3. Nice and slim chassis.
I got turned off with the hardware home button and most of all touchwiz. After using the gn for this many months and fussing with a touchwiz phone, I am spoiled with pure vanilla aosp. Touchwiz is so invasive, its everywhere in settings and other apks. I consider software to be THE MOST important aspect of a phone and touchwiz don't cut it.

No offense to present gs3 owners but I can't figure why one would get it over the gn. Totally understand the "must have the latest" mentality, but no thanks to touchwiz ics. Aosp Jellly Bean rulz. :D

Agreed, touchwiz is really cluttered and I'm thrown by the inclusion again of the menu button, but the hardware is pretty sweet

I just got off of a Thunderbolt, picked up a Nexus on the cheap with a free multimedia dock from Wirefly.

So far, I'm really happy with it, no regrets whatsoever. Good quality, fast hardware, solid performer and noticeably quicker than my former- even on stock build.

Best thing for me is far less wait (despite being a CDMA device), than most any other handset, to score the latest from Google.

If I had a choice I'd go with the SGSIII. They're both great phones, but the SGSIII has a better camera. That will be the one thing you will not be able to change, no matter what type of OS you put on it. My current Android phone as a descent camera, but not great. I'm always displeased with the photo results. If the camera isn't a big requirement, then I'd say go with the Nexus if you want that pure Android experience.

i have to agree here. i'm not really a picture-taker per se, so the camera differences (which are SUBSTANTIAL) have never been a big deal to me, however, if you are a person who takes vids and pics with regularity, the Galaxy S's cannot be beat. I sold my Galaxy S II to get this phone (changed carriers too) and that camera took WAY better photos than the GNex. And that was the SII. The SIII's camera is even better. On the SII, Touchwiz was just unacceptable to me and pure Android (with ICS) had become elegant enough to use as a daily driver so that drove me to switch. The SIII's Touchwiz (5 i think) is much less cumbersome so some of that TW aversion goes away. But Jelly Bean is just delicious and I love that the GNex has it already and, if history contiues to repeat itself, Galaxy S users will have to start a fire in Korea to get 4.1 on the SIII. The updates on those phones are WAY to slow. To me, that's more important than the pictures, but it's really a personal choice. As a side note, i don't think we should have to make the choice between cutting edge OS updates and total functionality, but hopefully, the new Nexus device will take care of that.

This is the conclusion I've come to as well, as long as I can unlock and flash, the only consideration is finding the hardware that makes me happy. Good call!

Be careful though. there is a HUGE difference between the Galaxy S and GNex communities. rooting and flashing is no big deal, but if you aren't a developer, finding something decent to flash can be the dealbreaker. That was always my problem when i a Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy S II) on Sprint. The roms were problematic at best. And that was when you could find something you wanted. For me, it's GNex. I've used the SIII for a couple days and i was impressed by it's improvements over the SII, but i would not even consider selling my GNex to get one, even if i was up $150 in the end. JellyBean and the GNex experience are that much better imho. But, remember, the Verizon GNex is old (in phone years) at this point. i would probably hold off a while until we see what the new Nexus will be like. i know it sucks to wait, but that might be the smartest thing to do at this point. Otherwise you might be joing the rest of us on Ebay and Craigslist selling phones to get new ones.

The camera on the Nexus is a complete joke. Anyone who tells you otherwise just hasn't used a decent camera and has no frame of reference.

I agree that the camera on the GN sucks, unless your outside on a bright sunny day. If I'm planning to go somewhere to take pictures I bring my SLR but there as so many times when I'm out where I find that I want to take a picture of my kid etc....its just not practical to lug your SLR or point and shoot camera's around wherever you go. The other problem I have with the GN is it seems to take forever for it to link with GPS.....usually several minutes!...is that normal?....I find that irritating. I have an upgrade and am anxiously waiting for news of the new Nexus. I just hope that Google will be smarter with the release and maybe make it available to several carriers instead of making it exclusively on Verizon. I think this will help push Verizon to release it faster instead of holding it while they try to sell more of their Droid lines.

In regular sun light its actually pretty good. In any other situation it blows.
