Re: Galaxy nexus released on the 18th

I had a Bionic which I exchanged with RAZR last Friday. (like Best Buy for their return policy). It will pacify me until GN comes out. Other than "cannot remove the battery", I like everything else about RAZR. I don't know why Motorola released Bionic after the first misfire. It would've been better if they went straight to RAZR in the first place.

p.s. how many returns/exchanges would it take to put me on BB blacklist? :p by the way, I'm a Premier Silver rewardzone member.

Re: Galaxy nexus released on the 18th

I was talking to the manager at a best buy and she said some guy did like 12 exchanges in 6 months before he was blocked by the system, but I would stop at 2

Re: Galaxy nexus released on the 18th

Us techies want the Nexus because we know what it really means - a pure Android experience and Google's latest and greatest.

Sorry I'm new to android/rooting, in fact this will be my first smartphone ever (I'm up to date with technology it's just that I didn't see the need for a smartphone until now), and I really don't get this....why is everyone here so obsessed with ics?? Because in the end, as I judge that pretty much everyone on this site is good with technology, won't everyone just root their phone? I thought if you root your phone you pretty much change the os and all the software on the device, thus making ics obsolete after you root your phone. So even if you get all the google updates first, won't it be useless because you rooted your phone? That's why I don't get why people who root their phones are so obsessed with getting a galaxy nexus just because it's ics and that it will get updates first.

Don't worry I'm still getting the galaxy nexus!! :)
I'm just wondering about this/thinking about rooting the nexus maybe for free hotspot?

with the source code for Android 4.0 having been released, developers will get their hands on it and create ROMS that will be ever more customized to their liking. it gives us options. it's not like ICS is just a skin (i.e., sense, blur, etc). it's an OS. if anything, i'm sure we'll see custom ROMS and Kernels that further optimize the OS. but you're right, in that most people root their phones to de-bloat and run something as close to vanilla android as possible. with the galaxy nexus and ICS, we'll have a pure vanilla android user experience. but that doesn't mean we still won't see some sick ROMS/Kernels (Cyanogen anyone?)

Rooting your phone doesn't really change the software but gives you access to parts of the software that are locked before rooting. Then your able to remove system applications and run some other applications that need root access to name a few advantages. After rooting you can run different ROM's which will be based off ICS so you won't lose that. Hope this helps but I'm sure some others can give you better answers.

Just for grins, I thought I'd pop over to VZW and run through the Upgrade My Device wizzy, and lo' and behold, a Chat screen comes up. Below is the chat session I had with "Mike C" (probably over in New Delhi), lol. Emphasis mine:

Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.

You are now chatting with 'Mike C'

Mike C: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?

Me: Hi, Mike. I keep checking back, but haven't seen the Galaxy Nexus offered. Do you have any idea when it will be available? Also, do you know if it will only be offered online?

Mike C: I'd be happy to help you with your question. (extended pause....)

Mike C: The Nexus hasn't been given a release date yet. I would expect within a month. It'll be available online and in store when it is out.

Me: Ok, thanks for the info. I'll check back occasionally, as that is the phone for which I really want to apply my upgrade. Thanks for your time!

Mike C: No problem!

Mike C: By the way, have you heard about Home Phone Connect? You can save money coming over from your existing home phone service!

Me: I have FIOS, thanks anyway. Actually, I wish I could cancel my land-line, but that's not your department.

Me: bye now

So, nothing new from Customer Support...

I will root right away. Even on a Nexus, the need to root is there... for me anyway. Adfree, Battery Calibration, Titanium Backup, and Root Explorer are some of my most used root apps. Drocap too, but I won't need that with ICS.

For power users/tweakers, root will always be useful. Anyway..... it's fun ;-)

Yes, exactly. In addition, keep in mind that if you have a phone with an encrypted bootloader, getting new roms developed and installed for it can take more time. You're also banking on enough developer interest in the phone you've bought to get your ICS upgrade, which is never a guarantee.

The Nexus allows you the freedom to choose your experience. The bootloaders on Nexus phones are not encrypted and they tend to be easily rootable (one advantage of a developer reference phone) so you can load custom roms if you wish. However, most buyers are not techies like us and will never root their phone or load a custom ROM. For them, they get the satisfaction of knowing they'll be the first to get the latest and greatest from Google with minimal interference from manufacturers and carriers for the life of their contract.

It's not a point to take lightly. One of Android's big frustrations is that when you buy a non-Nexus phone you really have no guarantees of whether the phone will ever see Google software upgrades or not. Two years is a long time in the mobile phone world and not everyone has the disposable income to buy phones off contract. As much as I hate to say it, it's one thing Apple has done right - ensured that older phones which are technically able to run a software upgrade can get it, so all phones are as much on the same page as possible. Google really wants to get to this point with the initiative they announced last spring to get carriers and manufacturers to voluntarily agree to support and upgrade all phones they sell for at least 18 months. There's rooting and ROMS, but again, you have to hope there's enough developer interest in your phone to ensure that it happens.

I'm giving it till this friday, if a release date isnt released i'll probably just order a $229 Razr from amazon.
One reason NOT to do that... FREEDOM.
If you really know WHY you want a Nexus, you can hold out a little longer.
