Galaxy Nexus with JB or Galaxy s3?

True, but just because verizon doesnt officially give you the update doesnt mean there wont be ports to the newest OS. If you root the nexus (like me) you can get jelly bean, and then the OS after that, and OS even after that, and so on. Look at the Nexus one for example, now running jelly bean. The rom support for the gnex will be much better than for the s3 in the long run. After the s3 is old news and stops getting updates, people wont care for their roms. I was not really in favor of rooting, because theres something i like about knowing im on stock the way i would get it from google. But the newest OS is greater to me than that feeling. The s3 is a great phone, i just like google better than i like samsung (in phone software terms). Sure they might get jelly bean at the same time, but thats probably the last OS s3 will ever get. In 4 months time come back to this post, and i bet anything that the s3 will be outdated. I just got the gnex about 3 weeks ago, and my plan is to keep it in mint condition, and sell it to buy the next nexus in a couple months. Cant wait

The s3 will likely easily be the most popular android phone by far. I find it hard to believe that ROM developers will abandon it. If you are planning on having to root either way then I would say it is a no brainer to get the phone with the superior hardware.

I honestly love my nexus and wouldn't trade it for anything. The s3 is nice and all but my nexus has little to no problems at all. The nexus isn't outdated as some people say, it still has hardware that's updated with today's standards. The nexus is a great choice for anyone looking for a phone

I would get the gsm nexus because it's a contract free phone and you get decent specs and updates

The GS3 specs make it the most future proof phone on the market - 1.5 GHz S4 with integrated LTE, 2 GB Ram, 16/32 GB storage with Micro SD expandability, 720P screen (I don't see/don't worry about the pentile thing). While Samsung/Carriers may be slow to update this is going to be the best selling phone in the world for the next year and Samsung wants to keep it's momentum going so we will at least see Jelly Bean and all the Touch Wiz stuff can be fixed with a new launcher or other apps. So far (and maybe I'm missing something) I not that super wowed with Jelly Bean on my new Nexus 7 (the tablets great, just don't see what all the JB hype is about - haven't played with Google Now yet). GS3 is fast smooth (just a little too big for my hands - 4.3-4.5 would have been perfect) and I've gotten rid of the Touch Wiz launcher but actually like some of the Samsung apps - Music Player is nice with an equalizer, Mail and Contact Apps work well. It's a great phone that I intend to keep for a long time (my record is 2.5 years with an old feature phone - LG Decoy).

The Nexus is free at best buy. The S3 may be great hardware, but if you can get a free Nexus, do it.

All I have to say is remember the Verizon model has a locked boot loader... But it would be hard for me buying a 9 month old phone. But support for this phone is great. I genuinely love my nexus. ROM choice is amazing. There were jelly bean ROMs almost instantly when Google dropped the code.

Sent from my galaxy nexus running jelly bean!

I had a s3 but gave it back.. I prefer vanilla android and jelly bean is sooo smooth. Also have the car mount and there isn't one like it for the s3... Love the pogo pins connecting to my deck!

I never understood this reasoning. With the cost of the two year contract, the upfront cost of the phone should never factor into a buying decision. You are theoretically stuck with this thing for at least 20 months. Buy the best hardware available right now.

Ok with that train of thought, i would suggest the Nexus for it's device life. When Google announces it's next OS, you know the Nexus will be getting it. Meanwhile the S3 will be probably just getting Jelly bean.

You don't know that it will officially get anything. This is not updated by Google. Verizon controls it.

I had a similar decision recently and went with the S3. I upgraded from the Nexus. The screen and camera and hardware are just too good on the S3 to pass up. The Nexus is great. But if you are going to root and all, you can just run CM10!

The Verizon nexus is not updated directly from Google. It is updated by Verizon an updates are not necessarily quick, loom how long it took to get 4.0.4. Long after every other galaxy nexus model.

I would venture a bet that both the s3 and verizon nexus will get official jelly bean in the same time frame.

This has been disproven over and over again. The nexus is updated directly from google, approved by Verizon.

That is what I meant. Verizon doesn't update any phone by itself. That being said, if Verizon decides that they are done supporting the nexus, they aren't going to approve any more software updates. It takes resources to do testing of every update they approve.

No brainer. SGS3. The GNEXUS is a almost year old device. I say waite about 3 months and you'll get the JB update for the S3.

Doubtful. Verizon will support the nexus as long as Google does.

That's true.. but there are a TON of casual users who don't care as long as they can call/text and browse the internet once in a while.. We obviously aren't those people. People can often even get a free upgrade, and they chose not to do it right away because their phones are still good enough for them.

I want the Galaxy S3, i'd take it over a Nexus.. I wouldn't use Verizon though, since they come with a locked bootloader..
