Galaxy Note 3 Verizon: Lollipop Update

OK, but I'm still going to twirl 3 times, tap my shoes with my knuckles and shave my head before I update, just to be safe.

I don't think it is necessary to do a system reset before or after the update. It isn't necessary, either, to remove your SD card, or do a recovery cashe clear. I didn't do anything special and my Lollipop upgrade went smoothly and my phone works great. In fact my phone with Lollipop is so snappy and smooth, my Note 3 runs like a newer phone, I would like to call a Note 3.5. Battery life seems better, too.

I have a suspicion that the upgrade was in two parts for a reason. The first part was really just to prepare the phone for the real upgrade, which was the second download. What the first download did may have included the cashe clearing. What else the first download did, I don't know, but nobody, so far, is complaining about any significant upgrading issues. I am glad Verizon took the time to get such a major upgrade done right. It was worth the wait.

In summary, I am finding Lollipop very sweet. In my experience, no other system upgrade, whether IOS or Android, has made such a significant performance improvement in any of my phones or tablets. IMO, nobody should hesitate or worry about doing this upgrade.

I too didn't do anything special before accepting the update. Thus far no issues other than I can't seem to find an option to keep my lock screen from timing out too soon. When I open the flip case id like to have my lock screen stay eliminated long enough to read the lock screen notifications.

Its actually harder than it appears. I make it look easy.

Do you have to have a sim card in to update? I'm using a different phone at the moment. I tried to update and it wont let me.
I've always needed to put in an active six card to download an update from verizon.

Well, looks like I'm going to get a taste of lollipop. I just turned on my tablet which hasn't been turned on in very long time and as it was waking up the upgrade showed up so I'll get to see it on my tablet before my Note 3. Crossing fingers.

UPDATE: False alarm. It upgraded to 4.4.2. Dang, would have liked to see a "trial run!"

While reading your lock screen notifications, just press on any open area. It won't time out as long as you are pressing on the screen.

I decided to install the update around midnight. The first part took about 15 - 20 minutes, went really fast. The second part (by the way these are 2 completely separate updates, after part 1 is done you have to go back and start 2) so the part 2 , took only a few minutes to get to 75% then the last 25% took about a hour and then it had to update 320 or so apps or something (wasn't specified ) that took about a 1/2 hour. My wifi runs at around 50 mps.
I can tell you right from the get-go that the battery life is much better.
And there are screens that explain some of the more important differences. The notifications on the lock screen tell you exactly what the notification is about....I read someone said they didn't and they explain how to turn on the multi-window feature. I'll just say that the beginning was weird because it put up Flickr when it came to choosing your screen. Just takes a minute to get around it.
I hope this helps some people and I left my sd card in with no problem.

Enjoy your new phone....sort of new that is

Does anyone know how to turn your phones browser into a floating screen? I've accidentally done it like 3 times and can't find anything on the Web about it. I'm not talking about using it from the multi window drawer either. I was surfing on Chrome and slid my finger across the screen or something and it turned it into a floating screen.

Re: Lollipop is here...according to Verizon

Idk what anyone else thinks but 5.0 made the home screen uglier. Folders???? Really???

I like the new folders. Instead of all the apps being stacked on top of one another, they are now small but visible within the folder along side one another. Before, with Android 4.4, you needed to open the folder to see what was in the folder under the top app. Now with 5.0 you can see more of them within a given folder. You only open the folder if you see the app in there that you wish to use.

Thanks, but the screen only stays lit for 1-1.5 seconds. If I have several notifications displayed on the lock screen I have to continuously tap the screen in order to preview the notification.... Was hoping there was a time out setting (5,10,15 seconds etc) I was overlooking.

Put me in the group that *doesn't* like the looks of lollipop. Really cheapened the looks of my phone. :( Everything so far seems to work ok but I'm not liking looking at my phone anymore.

Don't repeatedly tap on the screen. Just keep your finger on it while reading the few notifications you have.
I know that's not as elegant as a display setting, but it works.

I actually disabled the notifications on the lock screen. There IS a setting for that. It isn't that hard to unlock the phone and view the notifications from the pulldown.

If you have lock screen notifications enabled, you can not scroll personal identifying information along the top of the lock screen simultaneously with those notifications. If my phone should get lost, I hope that info will get me my phone back.

I agree 100%.. it looks almost cheap like idk. Ugly as hell though.

That doesn't work. Should've been more clear. I must repeatedly tap the screen. Holding my finger on the lock screen does not prevent time out. Before the update neither tapping or placing my finger on the screen to prevent time out was necessary for several seconds before timing out. For security reasons I change the pin on my phone (prying eyes at work). I have an occasional brain cramp, so before I had a moment or two to try to recall the most recent password before it timed out. Not a deal breaker but since playing with the lolipop settings I wasn't sure if the update allowed for this setting as well. I suppose not...

Usually the user is the one who grouped the apps together in the first place. The folders make this phone look ugly and cheap as hell.... It's almost like the Google team who put this together just threw a bunch of **** together quick and said that's good enough...

Anyone have an idea why this wasn't released via Kies first before the over the air update? Did Samsung know something that they didn't approve of? We all know what big red is like bc there's a bunch of 5.0 options that are not included in this update.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." So there is no arguing when it comes to one's appearance preferences.

When it comes to this upgrade, however, few will argue that it didn't provide a significant improvement in the performance of their Note 3. Even if they didn't like the new look, they should appreciate the improvement in smoother scrolling, quicker opening of apps, better battery life, and the return of the ability to copy and move files to their SD card. IMO, better performance and functionality trumps appearance, not to mention that any new top-end Android phone will look similar to the Note 3, since it will likely have Lollipop, too. Focus on the better performance and perhaps the look will grow on you. It has on me.
