Galaxy S 4 reading emails and PDF text?

I am new to android but I believe there is a function like there is in the iPhone that you could have your text read to you.
I have looked everywhere and cannot find how to do it.
On a iPhone you selected the text and it gives you the option to speak the words..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
