Interesting set of tests. I would have also liked to see a comparison between last year's Gorilla Glass 6 and this years GORILLA® GLASS VICTUS™

Either I'm just that unlucky, or Gorilla Glass just isn't the great thing it's made out to be.

I've yet to have a device that was dropped that didn't get a cracked screen, or have several scratches by the end of it's life.

Sure maybe lessor glass would have way more scratches, or would completely shatter vs crack, but I've never been impressed enough to not use a screen protector

I use a protector on my phone because I'm not afraid of scratches than a cracked screen lol. These new phones scratch so easily.

I think a lot of people get caught up in the marketing and forget that it's still glass, and will break or scratch. It canny defy the laws o' physics!

Neither, perhaps. It's a matter of how many times you drop the phone. GG is advertised to survive a certain percentage of drops of a certain type (80% on previous generations of GG; I haven't seen the specs for Victus). At that level of protection, a phone that's dropped more than a dozen times is still very likely to break; even a phone that's dropped only once still has a 20% chance of breaking.

I tend to drop my phone less than once a year. I've used smartphones since the first Note, without a case or screen protector (except the factory-installed protector for the Note 10), and have never ended up with a crack, or a significant scratch, on the front or back glass. Some people report dropping their phones multiple times per month. So different people can expect very different outcomes.

I owned the Moto unbreakable screen phones and I went without a case for quite a few years but always had a screen protector to protect the phone when in my pocket because of scratches. I don't drop a phone often but with those phones I had piece of mind. I would gladly sacrifice some display quality for an unbreakable screen again.

I still think that in many ways GG 3 was/is the best. Of course it was less flexible than the newer ones making it more prone to shattering if you dropped it on something...thus the "need" for a tempered glass screen protector if you are clumsy???
But if you are the type that hate screen protectors, and you use a case that allows for a better grip and fewer drops...GG 3 did not scratch under normal conditions! Yes you could scratch it if you really tried but I had phones sitting in a drawer years after their usefulness ended with GG 3 and the screens were like new. The later GG versions all were "softer" and scratched much more easily...but they tended to not shatter as easily when dropped. So, it all depends on the end user.

Glass is glass and will likely crack if dropped onto pavement or a hard floor. I'm more concerned about micros scratches. Sure scissors , knives don't do damage. We've seen that since the days of Gorilla glass 3. But its sand and dirt particles that will do damage.
