I verified this with two different support people. Samsung recommends Samsung headphones only. So much for "open" architectures. They both told me that 3rd party headphones will only support playing music but not the mic.

I was new to android when i found this out 10 days into use. As a long time iPhone user, this is a horrible example of an Android phone. I'm disapointed!

I'm not sure that is 100 percent accurate, I know usually CM says that because they want you to buy their products

I use the Plantronics headset with mic, it works fine with my S3. I had to get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter to fit the S3 port. I do not know the Model No.

I've used my iPhone headset and the FF/pause/play clicker works with the S3.

What's the model of your bose headphone?

I bought the Monster iSport. It works great with Apple's product, but the volume buttons don't work on the S3. I wonder if there is an app that can get the vol buttons to work on the S3.

Update: I exchanged my headphone for the livestrong version and very happy. BTW, it's on sale on ebay for 60 bucks.

Bose MIE2 is what I have. Its not the "I" versions meant for the iPhone, so they don't have the inline volume controls. I knew the inline volume buttons wouldnt work on an Android device, and its honestly not much more of an effort to reach into my pocket to adjust the volume. The mic button will pause and resume playback while listening to music.

Are you saying the volume controls work on the livestrong version???

Thanks in advance

The Sol Republic Amps doesn't work well with the SG3.
Listening to music works fine but when I answer a call it cuts audio from the headset and the mic doesn't pick up anything. Now when I try the included Samsung earbuds those work fine. I'm going to dig up my old Shures and the mic cable for that and try it out.

Not true at all. I use my skull candy headphones with mic all the time with no problem

Mine doesn't even recognize the Samsung headset that came with it. Whatever I plug in it shows up as earphones...

I really hate that Samsung is using some kind of proprietary jack for their headphones. I can not wear the ear plug style head phones that came with the s3 because they cause pain in my ears. I have 3 other headphones (with mic) and none of them physically fit into the jack because of the way Samsung designed their phone. I am working on making a custom adaptor. I'll snip the end off the stock headphones and build a generic adapter from it. Along with everything else I don't like about the s3, this headset issue is the last straw. I will NEVER purchase another Samsung product ever again.

So I was doing some dissecting of a busted pair of Bose MIE2i headphones (that worked exclusively only with my Apple products) and my OEM S3 headphones. Turns out this whole "switched ground and mic" thing might not be so. There is a definite difference in the specific ohm resistance for each button press on the controls, the but jack layout is no different between the two.

Update:

And the transplant is complete. Bose MIE2i now functioning with S3 control. The ground and mic are NOT reversed.

I bought this phone for two main reasons, to make and receive phone calls, and to listen to music. I do not like the Samsung ear buds they do not fit my ears properly and they fall out while riding my motorcycle.
The reason there are so many brands and styles of ear buds is just that. People find that different ear buds fit better or have a different sound to them that they enjoy. Which is why I (and many other people on the forums) assumed that they would be able to buy and use a pair of ear buds from another major manufacturer and have them work with this phone. Apparently this is not the case.
The Samsung brand ones work properly on my phone but the Skull Candy ones will only play music and skip tracks. They will not adjust volume or receive phone calls, why is this??
Both pairs of ear buds have the typical 4 pin connector. Just about everyone else's products support them, I never had an issue on my iphone, htc touch, ipod, zune, diskman, or cheap mp3 player or other phone I have owned.
The only reason I can see for Samsung doing this is greed (or sheer stupidity). Make other ear buds incompatible with the $amsung product so that you will have to buy the $amsung brand ear buds. I really hope that this is something that can be fixed with a software update, if not then Samsung has lost me as a customer.
I also used the Live chat support feature to contact Samsung and found them totally useless, both times they directed me to call the Samsung phone support. Phone support wasn't any better, just told me that they don't support 3rd party products... but wait a sec... isn't the sd card a 3rd party product? The phone was built to work with those...

I strongly urge anyone with a problem to contact Samsung, and if there is a way to fix this with an update, then hopefully they will. If not then perhaps they will fix it for the next gen phone.

Just got off the phone with Skull Candy and Samsung support, Samsung was useless but Skull Candy said there is an issue with the Skull Candy headsets not working on Samsung S3 phones. This is an issue with Samsung, they changed something within the mic configuration and now a lot of brands of inline mic earphones don't work properly. It is not a wiring issue it's a software issue and Samsung is working on an app to allow these other earphones to have full functionality. Please contact Samsung about this problem, the more complaints they get the faster we will get a fix! Here is the link to contact Samsung...

My phone doesn't support 3rd party microphones!
I tried the skullcandy and it didn't work. So I thought it was a problem with the head phones. I buyer
bought the Marley headphones, same problem.

Is there an app to correct this somehow?
:'(

I can report that my Ink'd 2 earbuds (w/Mic) work for music and pause/FF but NOT for the Mic on the Galaxy S3
My Maxell earbuds with mic do work.
If there is a software solution, I'd like to know. Guess I should ask Skullcandy.
