When using the preloaded Navigation app on my phone, I find that it overheats and shuts itself off. Is this normal or is something wrong with my phone.
I have had the phone for 11 months and did not have this problem before. I used to be able to get to my destination with out the phone overheating but
with the battery drained. I chalk this up to the excessive power useage to run the Nav program. But I can't even get 3 miles now without the phone shutting
down completely. It takes some effort to get it to restart too. I noticed the case is hot to touch and I have to wait at least a half hour before I can restart the phone.
Should I take it back to Sprint? This also happens with the two spare batteries I have. HELP!!!

Take it to Sprint and see how they can help you. This sounds bad.. Have you tried any other navigation apps, and does this only happen while using the Navigation app?

Well, you're doing something that is very device intensive when you use the Navigation App - you're taxing the CPU, graphics subsystem, screen, radios (usually GPS receiver, cellular radio and 4G mobile data) and battery. This is one configuration where I expect the phone to get hot, but it should not get so hot that it's causing the phone to shut down. That may be a safety mechanism to keep the phone from overheating, but it should throttle back the CPU to keep it from burning up.

Agreed, it's normal for the phone to get hot when using Nav, especially if you're charging at the same time. But mine has never gotten hot enough to shut down.

The OP doesn't mention charging while navigating - I'm curious as to whether there'd be a difference if she went ahead and plugged it in? I always have my phone charging while using navigation.

I have never tried to plug the phone in when I am using Nav. Perhaps I should try that before taking the phone back to Sprint. Thanks

I have the same issue, and I think is due to the new google map update.
I use google map for nav almost 2x a month over 15 months now. never had this overheat shutdown. but after the new update. Oh man... last than 15 to 20 minutes the S3 overheated and shutdown.
First time happen with a car charger plug in, I thought the charger didn't charge the phone and drain all the battery and cost the overheat, but after I restart the phone. I still have 75% left. So, second time no charger. something happen. Like I say, I never had this problem before.

I also notice the the new google map nav does't dimming the screen is always stay awake. and I thing this cost the problem to overhead.

Just reinstall the map. see how it work later

Ditto GSDer and meyerweb. Another thing to consider is whether the environmental conditions in the cabin of your vehicle have changed now that we are in the heat of summer? Or phone is being placed in spot not allowing air circulation? Could be just enough to push over a threshold?

My Daughter's S3 within the last 4 to 5 days has been getting hotter than it used to. Also the battery is draining extremely fast. Today while streaming music over bluetooth it shut itself down due to overheating. It even gave a warning stating it was shutting down due to heat.

Just to let you know that you are not along. This has been an issue for few of my friends and even my S3 gets really really hot when using the GPS (but never auto shutdown). If the phone is under the warranty, they should replace or fix your phone since this a known issue.

All the best!
