Galaxy S3 stuck in a "boot loop". How do I fix?

AC Question

okay so I've got a Samsung Galaxy S3 that is on its way out, but when I reached for it the other day, it only displayed the Samsung GalaxyS3 loading screen and wouldn't do anything else. So I rebooted it a couple of times and then gave up and left it on charge for the night. It then woke me up some hours later with a noise and I thought it had broken through, instead it was now stuck on the 'Samsung' screen with he logo pulsing.

So today I start some research and apparently I can fix it by restoring to factory settings but I didn't want to do this yet because I didn't have a backup, so I do further research into backing up without it being on and apparently I can do this by going into 'Recovery Mode'.

So I attempt this, thinking I've found the solution but instead I am shown an android logo with 'Downloading... Do not turn off target' so I think that's not right and try again, same thing happens. But now, my phone won't even show the S3 loading screen, it just goes straight to the downloading screen even if I've just pressed the power button.

The phone isn't really of any concern of me, my contract is almost up and I've already got a phone to use in the mean time, all I want is my pictures, videos ect and I promise from this point on to back up consistently!

If you can help me that would be amazing and please use lay man's terms, else everything is going to go right over my head! Thank you!!

Welcome to AC :)
I'd suggest trying a cache partition wipe. The steps are the same as the method for factory resetting you found, but it won't wipe any of your personal data.

It just just goes back the menu saying reboot system and all that

That's what it's supposed to do. Now reboot it and see if it fixed the bootloop.

Had to make an account to reply, but its the guest that posted this, I can't do anything but access what I think is called Odin? I either access that or just get the "Downloading" with the android screen. So any attempt to access the cache partition wipe wont work?

Download mode is volume down. For recovery just use volume up instead.

Ok, just wanted to make sure. I can think of ways to re-flash the stock ROM, but I don't think that will preserve your photos.

If you have an SD card inserted, remove it, and try rebooting again. If it's corrupt, it could be causing problems.

The microSD card.

As I mentioned above, a corrupt microSD card can make the system unstable.
