galaxy s3 whatsapp backup & restore

I did the backup of my samsung galaxy s3 with samsung kies --> factory resetted the phone --> and restored the backup. Now my whatsapp registered itself again with my phone number and all the old chat data is gone. How to get the old data. Was it not backed up by samsung kies??

I do not believe that Samsung Kies backs up the application data, just the app itself.

I browsed through the backup folder. It has whatsapp folder and also whatsapp db files in it but only for last few days. It indicates that it backed up whatsapp also but not efficiently. How can a program like Kies can be so inefficient.
