If you're rooted, there's an app in the Play Store called "Lagfix". It works in the same way that your computer uses fstrim to keep itself running smooth. I use it every day or so if my S4 starts showing some lag. If you purchase the Pro version you can set a schedule for it to run. Upcoming flagship devices are going to have this preinstalled from the factory.

One year after it's released, it lag stutters and scroll lags at every turn. It's hilarious that anyone expected to be fixed.

Looking at the way they REMOVE all the new Jelly Bean UI elements and replace them with Gingerbread, I wouldn't be surprised if they've been replacing newer Jelly Bean code with code from Gingerbread either. Their ROMs are just monstrosities.

So you got a prototype from Samsung 5 months ahead of everyone else?
Anyway with TW 4.3 update and all bloatwares deleted this phone is very fast,at least as fast as my old HTC One.
Some apps can be slow to open like Gallery but once launched they are fast inside.
Will try CM 11 4.4 roms once they are stable, ART should fix the apps launching speed

The lag issue with the Galaxy S4 is annoying and unacceptable. People who have never used other devices may not be aware of it. I was coming from the HTC One X+ which is a generation behind the S4 and the lag with the S4 was surprising. I was used to taking a picture in a fraction of a second with the HTC but believe you me the S4 can take a photo 3seconds after you press the button. It opens an internet page several seconds after a phone that is a generation behind. I am disappointed with this phone. I am not exaggerating. I am comparing it to the One X+ and I have never used the HTC One. I just expected it to be better. It is better in other ways than the One X+ but definitely NOT on speed. I wonder how the benchmarks are assessed. If you have an S4 take a picture right now, you will be surprised. My S4 is one month old and it was slightly better 4weeks ago, but still disappointing on speed. It may have great hardware but poorly utilised. If you are not aware of this lag, you have never used a truly fast phone. Try the HTC One X+. I don't know if the One improved on that because I havent used it.

I've being experiencing this lag issue the past month since updating to 4.3. Not resolved either despite recent 4.3 patch. My solution was that I uninstalled all updates of samsungs S health app, cleared the cache and forced stopped it. I found that this immediately resolved my lag issue and my s4 is back working to its former speed.

Ive owned the s4 a few times in the past 8 months and in the first few days you dont see any lag but it does start to appear with more use of the phone and im guessing its touchwiz and not the hardware which makes sense with cyanogen making it lag free. Its a beast phone dont get me wrong but i feel theres a few corners they need to clean up. If the s5 goes in the same path with 1000x features and not fully optimized we going to see alot of people talking again
