Galaxy S4 messaging indicator not working

My husband has a Verizon GS4 and when he gets a text message the # doesn't show up on the little messaging icon. It did when he first got the phone. He is usually where he can't hear the sound so depends on those numbers to know if he has any text messages. The one for the missed phone calls works. I have AT&T and don't have this problem with my S4.

If you message him and then look at his notifications. Use two fingers to split the text and see if that shows what you are wanting.
