Galaxy S4: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

This exact issue happened on my S3 with a sandisk so I put in a samsung and problem solved. A little over a week ago I took that same samsung micro sd and put it in my new s4 and everythings been fine up until a couple hours ago. It said it was unmounted and now its not even showing up at all and I put it into my laptop and its not even showing up at all. Like its not existing. I don't know what to do. So mad I am actually thinking of going over to the darkside and getting an iphone because of this and a few other things that are annoying like the backwards texts that samsung and att cannot fix. I am tired of this. Any help from anyone would be appreciated or I am gonna bite the bullet and give up on the android network.

This thread was a major eye opener. How can Samsung not be aware they have a problem here? I don't think it is just a card issue; I think it is an Android issue.

My own troubleshooting seems to point to a problem viewing the files on the device. As long as I don't try to view the recorded images on the device (ESPECIALLY panoramic images), I haven't had problems. So, as a workaround, try moving all media to a PC first. This doesn't make sense to me because just viewing files should only be reading data, not writing/corrupting.

I have used Recuva to recover corrupted files with some success.

Based on this thread, Samsung cards seem to be better. Anyone know what is different about Samsung cards? I always use Sandisk but I guess I have to give up that nasty habit.

Hope this helps someone.

So my gallery went missing on my external SD card after having camera loading errors.

I put the card in my computer sd slot, and the computer asked if I wanted to repair the card. It also asked if I wanted to recover lost data.

I did both options and my computer created a file called LOST.DIR

All the pictures were in there, but I had to put a file extension on each file.

Oh wow, I recall seeing a LOST.DIR folder in either my internal memory or on my card before... I never looked into it due to lack of time, however. Were you able to recover those pictures, then?

I apologize for not being able to respond to this thread in FOREVER! I haven't really got too much of a chance to play around with my phone and see what else I can find about this issue. However, some of you may recall (I think I posted about this, at least) that I decided to put a ton of music onto my card (Sandisk 32GB) and nothing much else. I believe I went about doing this by reformatting the card on my phone, then copying the music from my computer into the card by USB through my phone.
I don't know if doing this makes the files "go through the phone" or not, but after awhile I noticed that some music seemed glitchy. At first there were small, extra noises in the music itself. I also noticed that sometimes the time of the song and its playback were not synced together.
After adding more music to my phone, things got real weird! For instance, a song that I would add was supposed to be 6 minutes long. However, the file itself became 21 MINUTES. The playback of the file would sound normal, but the song would cut off at points and repeat from the beginning or other places - I guess until the very end of the 20 min. Some files even went at least 6X faster (I noticed that it wasn't like the 'typical' fast-forward where the pitch of everything is higher - all the pitches were the same, just the file played much faster than normal). Some files would become 00:01 in length (1 second long of a file, with the ultra fast-forward going on during the second). Obviously I have no idea how or why this happened!
I also got to use the app, SD Insight, that mrsmubles mentioned. My results apparently showed this SD card is likely not legit (the app said something about how it was not supported or invalid - can't quite remember).

As of now, I'm not using an SD card in my phone 😣. I actually am using the card in a camera by using an SD card adapter, and things seem to be going smoothly. The camera also senses that it's a very large card (says 9999+ pics are remaining, for example). However I may want to try and check if this card is truly legit with the tester H2testw. I've used the application before (only on computer) wherr it told me this one "64GB" SD card my dad got was a fake and was actually only 8GB. Hopefully the test will let me know if the SD card really has anything to do with these issues!

Made account today just to post I am having the same problem!
It started last week for me. I have had my Galaxy S4 for a year now, bought it when it first came out. I got a 64gb sandisk shortly after. Up until last week everything was fine. At first the pictures and music were just disappearing so I didn't realize what was really going on; I thought I was tweaking. I downloaded a couple whole albums and transferred to the sd card. The next day when I went to listen to them again, they were gone. So I downloaded again and each song was only 2 seconds long. So I just deleted them, forget it, I don't have time to keep playing with all this. Thinking maybe it was unstable connection when downloading or something. But then a few days later, I went out and I took some pictures only to try and review them and all but 2 were gone. Couple days later I go to work, take a picture of my schedule like always, go to check it a day later and it comes up with the corrupt symbol. I noticed some other pictures have also been replaced with this symbol. Now all the pictures I take tht go directly to sd card end up corrupt, either instantly or over a period of some time. Photos tht tried to auto backup were hit and miss, some made it, most didn't. Everything from before last week is still fine and I've backed everything up to sister's laptop for now. When I put the sd card in the computer though it did tell me that it is corrupted and needs to be fixed however, when I click ok to fix it, it does nothing. It says it can't do it. So I guess for now I just don't use any sd card.
Everything I save to the phone itself is fine. So I'll have to tryn use tht until this is fixed. Only 3gb, yikes!
I just updated to Kitkat yesterday thinking that the update would fix my problems since some apps that I updated recently must've changed for kitkat and weren't working for my jelly bean anymore. But it hasn't.
Going to try and contact t-mobile, samsung and sandisk today. I have no idea how to contact google about anything but if anybody knows, let me know.
It seems like this has been going on for some time with no real fix.
Will update with any info I can get.

These experiences are nearly identical to what I've had. I also recently performed a test on my computer (H2testw) which found that my SD card now only has 1.8GB of good space. (If I can, I may try to post what the application showed me). But it seems that my phone likely corrupted my SD card to have it become like this. However, I'm *pretty* sure I can still carry over 1.8GB on the card - I currently have it in my camera and will fill it up overtime with normal use. I don't know if the test app read the card incorrectly/had a mistake, or if the card can truley only hold 1.8GB. I recall that I was able to carry more than that in my phone, but I guess we'll see..

Well I searched all day yesterday.
Last night when I opened fx file explorer it gave me a message tht said, android has made sd cards read only. I don't know where they get off doing tht without asking, or even really announcing so for tht matter but...
It said only third party apps are affected but obviously not because I can't use the stock camera or file manager to move or save files. -_-
I even tried formatting my card on my phone last night and it wouldn't. It just restarted. Idk if tht was just a glitch or not. Since updating to kitkat my phone has been restarting spontaneously.
Either way, after reading tht I think the only solution is to root and to add in the line of code to give back read write permissions.
Will report back.

I'm back. I've rooted my phone. Deleted some bloatware lol.
Anyway I tried two different kitkat SD fix apps and neither worked. I see how they altered the permission file but I think it's not working because they didn't add the end permission tag in a new line. I know how trivial tht seems but...
I tried to manually alter myself but I can't. I get the warning "changes won't be saved because this is read only."
So I'm thinking plug in to computer and try to alter through tht.

Got the same corruption problem on S4 with Samsung class 10 card! Samsung do something to help your users!

This may not be relevant to everything in this thread, but I thought this set of comments from a reviewer on Amazon of the 128gb Sandisk card was interesting concerning Samsung issues with high capacity cards:

In part the review (from about 8 months back) says:

"When used in the GS4, this card will unmount itself inadvertently (may be true only for cards manufactured before the ROM patch described below was implemented in manufacturing). This can cause the data to become corrupt (luckily was not my experience) and / or can be very frustrating as most of us are saving 13 MP camera pictures to the card (or MP4 movies that stop in the middle of the movie) and it unmounts when you view the picture in the gallery or worse, right when you take the picture (this was the issue I experienced).
- SanDisk knows about this issue. Again, SANDISK KNOWS ABOUT THE ISSUE AND WILL REPLACE YOUR CARD. Call them (info below) and they WILL take care of it under warranty. They have a good name for a reason and they want to keep it. (sorry SanDisk about the 1 star, but I thought it was the way to get the message out to those searching for a solution)
- The customer rep told me that SanDisk tried to work with Samsung to resolve the issue but Samsung refused to acknowledge a problem exists with this card and some of their phones (especially their flagship GS4 phones).
- The customer rep told me that to their knowledge the card works fine in regular cameras (not Samsung GS4 phones with cameras, obviously) and even worked fine in some phones from HTC etc. that could accommodate the 64 GB cards. Hence the 5 star ratings from others.
- The solution SanDisk came up with was to write a patch into the ROM of the card itself to specifically address the issue on Samsung GS4 phones (and maybe other Samsung phones like the GS3). I was assured that the new card I would get would work flawlessly. will see in about 3 weeks."

He updated later and said the new card was fine.

I had same problem. Solution: REBOOT PHONE with Sd card in phone. All photos transferred over to Sd card after reboot. I had to reinstall one of the apps though. Hope this helps.

That is absolutely correct. I once had a S3 with store bought 32 gb pny micro sd. The phone fried the S5 card in 3 days. Notice I got was storage card removed, then didn't work at all. I now have galaxy s4 and bought samsung evo 32gb, and works fast and perfectly at class 10. Samsung wants to be proprietary with their products.

Man, I wonder if I still have a warranty on my card! That would be awesome to get a replacement haha. Thank you for the information!

--Try it in a card reader attached to your computer. If that doesn't work, you have a bigger problem.
--There are some software packages that can fix things on corrupted cards; they might be able to retrieve files if you haven't overwritten to it
--For the future, make sure to use some auto cloud backup. Lookout will do it. For free, Facebook, Google+

i have tired it in my adapter SD card which it goes in to.. and still nothing ...

Attached to your computer, I presume?

Try downloading a software program like cardrecovery.com. It will likely work if there is retrievable data.

It is pretty good at rescuing files, but can't fix everything. Do nothing to the card until you've used this program or a similar one.

Nb: This happened to me once with a card I screwed up in my laptop. Worked great.

DO NOT BUY THE SOFTWARE IMMEDIATELY. Download it as an evaluation copy. It will run and tell you if the files are there and it can fix things. It won't recover the files until you purchase a full copy, though. But don't start out by buying it. Just download and install the trial.

Im having the same issue im on the phone with samsung as we speak and I gave them the link to this thread so hopefully they will look into the issue n something will come from it. I have the note 3 with a brand new samsung 64gb sd card class 10 I believe. I also have another brand 64gb sd card and they are both having the same issue

Btw did anything ever come of this for a fix? Samsung is unsure aswell it seems like so far

Just an idea that I thought of while talking to samsung, is when I got my new sd card I just used my usb cable to transfer files. N I just formatted my sd card through my phone n took a picture n now its showing on my sd card. I haven't been able to try but my thought was what if I format my sd card n get like a micro sd card usb adaptor or just a micro sd to sd adaptor and transfer my files that way compared to transfering them through my phone? Also samsung did make kind of a valid point when I came at them with they need to figure it out... what samsung does is makes the phone hardware n stuff they have a few user interfaces with the software. But the stuff samsung is responsible for is the internal hardware ect and its reading I have my sd card in and phone is working like it should. The phone is like a computer. You buy a dell but the software is owned by Microsoft. And not saying that it cant be caused by the user interface software that samsung provides but I also seen a post with someone who has a Nokia is hhavinga similar issue. With that being said I personally think it might have something more to do with googles end like people stated when kit kat came out. Im not for sure but thats just my 2 cents on the situation
