Galaxy S4: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Ok, buy SAMSUNG only for Samsung device. Anything else and you're asking for problems. I've had a few problems with Sandisk in different devices and not all were Samsung. Never had a problem with a Samsung card in Samsung device. So stop posting about a problem with your card if it's not Samsung. It is inferior product at this point. It tired of receiving posts about a POS card not working. If you buy a cheap card on Amazon because it is the best deal, stop complaining about it not working. You get what you pay for. Most of them are knockoffs or old anyway.

ATT N3

I have the Note 3 and bought a Samsung SD card, and I'm having the same issue. I placed it in my phone and transferred all my data, it worked like a charm...for 2 days. My music would not play and all of my pictures were corrupt. I then formatted the SD card in hopes that would fix the issue. It did not. Images are saved for a short time and then are no longer recognizable. As for music, some files play while others say they are not a recognizable format; even though it's the mp3 format that another similar file is. I can't figure out what the issue is. I have to think it's the operating system or the galaxy in general.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I have had the problem on the S3 the Note 10.1 and now starting to happen on the Note 3.
The problem is you start seeing the Card dismount at random times. Then after a couple of these you need to reformat the card. Then after you have done this a couple of times not even a reformat will work. You then get one shot at a low level format and then when it fails the next time nothing. The only card type I have not tried is a Smasung as you never see them forsale here.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I've been converting BD movies and some hr long rec TV shows using handbrake and so far no transfer issues and all the video plays back just fine. As I mentioned if you run into corruption issues just use your pc to repair the SD card no need to reformat. So far my Z1S has been pretty solid and I've had it for about a month now with only one reboot fingers crossed.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Wish I could do that. After my card stopped working in my phone, my computer won't even recognize it.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Just to add to the thread : I got the same problem twice with a Galaxy S4 and a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB MicroSDHC C10/UHS1 (as stated above).
As far as I know everything was ok if I only use it as a collecting device for pictures, videos and music.
I just reproduced the problem recently and this is what happened : the problem appeared some times after I used Application Manager to put some AppData onto the SD card.
It was quite some time since the last time I used this functionality and everything was OK with pictures, videos and music on my SD card. And just when I tried the SD application manager ... everything goes wrong.

As a supposition, it seems that you can't rely on the App Data on SD at the same time you are using your SD card for medias ... which is a big bug I think.
For quite some time I was using my AppData on SD but without any pictures or videos, but then I put them on card and boom. And now that I was using my card for medias, it can't melt with AppData on SD ... frustrating.

Maybe it is something else as I play some games on my S4 and the phone is sometimes hot. But I was pleased that everything was ok for 2 months with pictures, videos and music and the day after using AppData on SD, something went wrong.

The last time I used a SD recovery software that brought back 90% of my pictures. I will try again ... but what to do with the SD.Is this really the AppData 2 SD that doesn't work or something else ?

I just thought - maybe TouchWiz could have something to do with it, too?

But I agree with mercscrew, this problem seems to not stem from the SD card but from somewhere in the phone itself. There have been multiple people here that have used Samsung cards and still received problems. So it's not just SanDisk or other brand SD cards that have been causing the problem.

Just found this on the forum. Going to try it when I get home.

Awesome! I might try this as well. Although, at the moment my card just has music which (I think) is all fine. If I try adding pics and they go bad, then I'll try it out! Thank you for the link! Hopefully it works out for you.

Are your files staying intact, or are they going corrupt?
If they are staying fine during the dismounts, then from what I myself have experienced, this is kind of different. I've noticed that it sounds like more people have the same problem as what you just explained than with what I explained in the start of the thread.

Maybe these two problems are closely linked together? I haven't memorably experienced the unmounting issue - just the corruption one. So, these two problems may be related to each other or not.. I'm just not sure

Relating to my post a number of days ago about clearing my card and adding music to it, I added the music by computer (stuck the SD card in the computer itself, using a SD converter). I've haven't had any noticeable problems with my music files after transferring the files with this method. Hopefully they stay intact, giving good reason to use a computer to transfer data to the card instead of the phone itself.

Im not an android phone user yet but wanted to know if the s4 and s3 has this issue or only s4?

Yaaay Android is awesome! (Besides this issue of course..)

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I too have been having too much trouble. I purchased Sandisk 32gb card for my S4 and tried to transfer apps (I transferred 4 square for testing purposes), when I rebooted my phone, the app show as not installed. I tried transferring games and it did the same thing.

I tried to format the SD card but after it unmount, it will say damaged SD card and needs to be formatted. Nothing happens when you format the card, it will just go back to the error that it is damaged.

I went back to the store where I purchased the SD and we've tried 8 other brand new SD cards and got the same problem. We even tried formatting the card on a pc before placing it on the phone but it's still the same thing. When an app is transferred and the phone is rebooted, it will uninstall the app.

I am going to a Samsung service center tomorrow to get this checked and I'll let you guys know what they'll say.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Just searched the same problem and came to this thread. I thought the issue was with copying at 1st as I usually take most of my photos on my nikon camera but download alot of movies etc from cartoon hd and transfer them to sd. But spent the day at wonderland with my kids and only took my phone. Ive gone to upload my photos and every single one is corrupt. Im absolutely gutted. I wont delete the photos as im hoping to find a way of restoring the photos :o (

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Just went to Samsung service center a couple of days ago and I was told that I may have a bad board since the S4 will not allow me to transfer files from phone memory to sd. My phone is currently under repair and will update again once I get my phone back.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Got my phone back with a new board. Everything is working perfect now. I don't see any corruption when pics and videos are transferred on sd.

I'm a happy camper for now, hopefully I won't have any issues anymore.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I have a genuine 64gb Samsung micro sd card in my galaxy grand and it is also having corruption issues so SAMSUNG only for Samsung device is not the answer.
This is the second card I've had this issue with although the 1st was the 1kb pic issue and this time the file keeps its size eg: 3.2mb but no data. Sadly too I don't think it is recoverable as I've looked at the files in notepad ++ the corrupted file shows just nul where as the viewable one has a lot more jargon in it indicating data. So this would seem to show that whatever is happening to the files it is causing them to loose there data.
Now an interesting scenario also happened with some of my pics as when I saw some had corrupted I decided to copy them on to my computer to back them up (at least the working ones) which worked but then when i went to view some of the same ones back on my phone some of them had corrupted and the view in notepad ++ showed that they had lost there data and all that was left was 2.6mb of NUL's

This is just some food for thought as I'm lending more towards it being a Samsung issue and not so much a card issue (although there are lots of dud cards out there).

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I am running a genuine Samsung card, and I am able to copy files to it just fine, until I try to copy a file with a _ (underscore) in the filename. So 4000+ music files work fine until there is an underscore.

It's not just a samsung issue. I had a pantech flex as soon as i transfered my music files most of the had corrupted. Then i set my phone to save all taken photos to sd card. All of the became corrupt. Now i have a lg g pro. I am using the same 32 gb san disk i re formatted before i plave it in my new phone. As i suspected MOST music files that i transfered from my laptop are bow corrupt. And all taken pictures are the same. This is getting a bit rediculous. Because i have lost so many important pictures over this. And my music is almost equally important to me. Please help!!

None of my music files have an underscore. But their still corrupted. It will play a high pitched frequency sound off my phone. Makes no sense.

Same thing happens with my HTC Desire X. Also keep getting messages saying permissions are wrong. I have to take out the card, unlock using an adaptor and/or go to properties and change permissions then revert to what I had, which is everyone can do anything. Often can't take pictures at all if the message comes up. If I think the pics will become corrupt, or don't save, which is what I think the problem is, I quickly add to Dropbox. Pretty sure it's saving to the card that is the problem. I have a 32 GB card and les than 3 GB used. Most things won't go to the card.

not just Samsung. It must be the cards but everyone has different cards too.

Just found this information here Best Memory Cards for Android Phones | Smart Mobile Phone Solutions .
I'm going to try a class 10.
"Choose one with class

When choosing a memory card it is very important that you consider its Class. When I say Class I’m not talking about the adjective meaning stylish excellence I’m talking about speed. Micro SD cards use Class to determine transfer speeds. The Higher the Class the faster the phone will be able to read and write information to and from that SD card.

If you buy a memory card with a Speed Class of 2 (lowest Class) then your phone, camera, or device can only write 2 MB/sec (two megabytes per second). A Class 4 SD card can only write 4 MB/sec, Class 6 is 6 MB/sec, and Class 10 will write 10 megabytes per second.

Some devices won’t even work right if the memory cards Class isn’t high enough. For example if you have a camcorder or video recorder built for a class 6 memory card and try to use a Class 2 or Class 4 SD card then your videos might error, might be fragmented, read “busy”, or might just error out and not work at all.

So when shopping for an SD card if your given the choice between multiple memory cards of the same size then don’t simply choose the cheapest option because chances are it has a lower speed class rating and is not necessarily the better product. You don’t want to have to wait for your pictures to open in your gallery, or wait 5 minutes to transfer photos or videos from your phone to your memory card, and if your camera is HD then you’re going to want to make sure your videos record and save properly to your SD card."

My Samsung 32gb class 10 sd card has only corrupted about 10 of the 400 pics I've taken this month. Are we facing a time when we will have to buy phones with huge amount of gb space so we can have everything we want on the device? Dollar amount of plans may go down, but have to pay full charge for the device itself? I'm not liking this. What happens when our cloud goes out of service like Sprint Picture Mail and I've had too many computers crash over the past 18 years and losing all that was in it. External drive to backup everything, but Darn! I'm WAY too dependent on technology.

Well, on my note 3, fHD videos run about 120Mb per minute or 2MB/s.

When recording in 4k,it uses about 350MB/min or about 6MB/s

It's my understanding that all the corruption happens in the first few minutes after the camera app writes it to the SD.

My plan is to let the camera app write the file to internal memory.
Later I'll copy them to the SD, and delete them from memory still later.
It seems to be working so far.

I no longer think this is a Samsung or SD issue. Hopefully a android update will fix it.

I haven't checked/tried yet, but I recently updated to Android KitKat. Perhaps this might have been looked at during the time Samsung worked on the new Android? I can try a few tests to see if anything happens... 😮
