Galaxy S4 - Not connecting calls and Softcard has stopped error

Since the last update for the S4 I have had problems making and receiving calls. The phone shows that it is connected but I can not hear the caller. In order to correct the problem I have to restart my phone. Usually when this happens I also get the message "Unfortunately, Softcard has stopped." I am not sure if these issues are related. I have gone to the Samsung desk at BestBuy and they have attempted to fix the issue with no success. They even did a factory restore.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Ask them that, since it was their update that caused the problem, and they can't seem to fix it, could they please replace the phone for you? (Make sure everything is backed up.) Ask, if they can't get Best Buy stock to replace it with, you can keep the phone until the replacement arrives, with a return shipping label at their expense. (They caused the problem, so you shouldn't be without a phone or have to pay to ship it back.)

Some day, if we're all lucky, Google will "discover" software written around 1988-1989 that can live-update a device without causing a problem if the update doesn't work. If we could do it back then, in a computer the size of a desk telephone, with the primitive computers we had, they can do it on modern cellphones. Play Store is a much more complex piece of software.

I've been having this issue since September or so...only one customer service person at Verizon has even looked into the issue (everyone else has just sent me new phones, which produces the same issue over and over again ). Apparently they've been working on this since the beginning of December. I've had 4 phones, 3 Sim cards, and too many factory resets to count now! I'm seriously thinking about changing carriers if they don't rectify this issue soon...especially since they won't let me trade this phone in and get another without an outlandish charge!

This sounds like the problem I had. To solve it I turned off the Google Now feature that allows you to launch Now from any screen including the lock screen. After turning that off the problem went away.

I had the same problem today (2/12/2015) on my Galaxy S5. I went to "Setting" -> "Applications" -> "Application manager" then shut down Softcard as much as was possible since it could not entirely be uninstalled, rebooted phone and then I was able to make phone calls again.
