Galaxy S4 Turns Off by itself sometimes

I got my Galaxy 4s in around 24 July 2013. It has now turned off three time by itself. The screen just went black and I had to remove the battery to get it to work again.
Given I have just got rid of my iPhone & iPad after my iPhone needed to be replaced due to bluetooth issues yet again. I am starting to think it it was a good idea.
I'll find out soon enough.

Mine does exactly the same and I have to take the battery out to restart - HELP - I want this phone to be good.

Hi, i just bought S4 4g 32gb on 27th July 2013. Facing the same problem as yours. Keep switched off a few times. The battery life was good and the phone was just OK if i used, surf internet or play with it. It only will turned off when i left `him' alone.... same method, i had to remove the battery to get it work again. Did samsung create S4 as a attention seeker which we need to care all the time... coz everytime i left `him' alone, it will turned off.. :-(((

Hi

I also has my S4 switching off teh first 2 days I got it. It occasionally happened when i switched on the camera. I has a 64GB sd card installed and had the phone saving pictures to the card. Once removed the card, it seems to be fine so far!

Yeah this is troubling. I've been with a virtually problem free Galaxy Nexus and then the Nexus 4, and I may have made a mistake because I wanted to try the (at&t carrier bloat filled) Galaxy S4. The only reason I wanted to try it was for the 32 gigs as the Nexus phones just haven't had enough storage for me. But I've only had this S4 for 8 days and it has already shut off on me 3 times now. Today was the third time while I was sleeping, and since I use my phone as my alarm clock, this is a no go for me. I need to have my phone consistently working- especially when I need it as an alarm to wake up. I forget before I went to all Nexus these are little things that I would experience with other Android phones. I think when skins are put on top of Android, it gets messed around with by adding unnecessary carrier software & their apps, unnecessary features etc, it just comes out buggy no matter how nice they try to make it. I had an HTC One that I already took back because the capacitive keys stopped working within the first 10 days. Like I can't win- I just want a 32 gigabyte Nexus. So frustrating everytime I give a skinned version of Android a chance- I always have to deal with some stupid annoying thing that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It never fails :-/

Problem back , when using camera phone restarts after freezing....NOT good. This is an international version I9500

I have the same issue.
Since yesterday evening, when the screen turns of of my Galaxy S4, the whole phone shuts down.
This is unacceptable for a phone. I've tried everything since but issue still not solved.

Version i9505

very strange, I just can't use the phone anymore. It is original, not rooted or anything.

happened to my S4 today, battery was at %32 when it happened. Last thiing I did before this happened was I tried to connect to the Mall wi-fi but couldn't get an IP, I put it in my pocket, I tried to use it after 10 minutes and it was dead, nothing worked until I removed the battery. iPhone user for 5 years and this is my first Android phone, been using it for more than a week.

Had my T-Mobile S4 for about 3 months now. Today, my phone started shutting down by itself every 5 minutes or so. There is no shut down animation and no warning of the phone shutting down at all. Unless I check, there is no way to tell if my phone is turned on or not. The phone has been just sitting on my desk.

Now I'm paranoid and checking my phone every 2 minutes...
:'(

Re: Galaxy S4 Turn's Off by itself sometimes

Tried this. No change. Wonder if it's a similar problem I had with S2. Got my S4 29th April and LOVE it but this turning off is getting more frequent. Off to Vodafone tomorrow I think and see what they say!

My mums s2 from three UK has turned off while I was casually looking for a certain app swiping through the menus... But my s4 hasn't had a problem one little bit since I bought it from launch date. I think I have an s4 from a batch that was made all correct and properly considering my s4 is sim free and free of all carrier bloatware only Samsung bloatware.

I had a problem with my phone turning off during use or when the battery was less than 50 percent. I suspected there was something wrong with the battery. The back of the phone was bulging so I removed the battery and the battery had increased in size and looked as though it was going to burst. I suspect that the battery buldge must of been from leaving the charger in all night. Once I replaced the battery with an anker replacement the phone has been working perfectly and has not randomly turned off at all and the battery life of the anker battery is great from 15 - 20 hours.

Has anybody reset their s4 as suggested and found any improvement at all? I have had my phone for just over 2 months and for the 1st month it was brilliant. I loved it. Great photos, easy to use- even for someone who is not very tech savvy. Then it just started to shut off when I was in the middle of scrolling through facebook or tapping out a text message. I had noticed that for about a week prior to this the battery had been getting extremely hot. I contacted the service dept at Samsung in Australia and told them that it seemed like every time I plugged the phone into the charger that the battery level was at 62%. At first it was suggested that I perform a factory reset but I told them that I was reluctant to do this. I felt that it was the battery that was the contributing factor. They told me to contact the company I purchased the phone from. I asked for a replacement battery as I was positive that the battery was the whole problem. I was reluctant to do the reset as when I backed everything to KIES I couldn't see that my apps had been copied over and I didn't want to lose them. I have made sure that all apps are closed in my phone and that the cache is cleared but now the phone is lucky to stay on even when the battery level shows 95%.
So has anyone had any luck with getting their phone back to normal and what avenues did you follow to achieve this.
Many thanks for any help and advice.

I bought it just 2 weeks ago. Since last 3-4 days it turns off on its own and then turns on after sometime. Mostly it happens when phone is not in use. This is so annoying that today it turned off more than 20 times and I am completely peeved by this experience. Moreover Batter gets drained immediately. It runs out after every 2-3 hours of charging it full. Even when I shut off Wi-FI or Mobile Data Plan to prevent running of background applications it drains quickly. Please advise and help what to do

My phone used to shut off as well, it would freeze and then restart. I had a Kingston Class 4 16gb sd card, my dad tried using it on his S3, kept restarting the phone so he gave me. No luck with the S4, I bought a Kingston Class 10 32gb sd card and the problem stopped altogether.

I have recently been having the same problems plus ive noticed my internet n phone signal goes then it shuts off. Wont switch back on unless on charge this has been happening wen the battery is 50% or less its always wen im either roaming on facebook or playing games. Ive uninstalled every app that i installed before it started to happen n still no joy. Wen it switches off n i put it on charge it basicly says the phones flat then goes up to 50% plus. I have more aless tried everything n now feel like smashing the phone against wall. Someone said its because im never off it n its on charge a few times a day n its caused damage to battery

I have been experiencing the same problems, I am in Australia. Mainly when using the camera or viewing gallery and the battery is under 50% the phone will just shut down on its own. Trying to turn it on it just keeps shutting off. Removing battery and leaving it off will enable me to turn it back on eventually but as soon as I use the camera again and I think sometimes just using any app it will shut down. I have discovered that plugging the phone into a charger either into a power point or my laptop or the juice2go battery pack the phone will come back on easily and never reboots. I wonder if its the battery or a some power issue. So for now I carry my juice2go power pack with me and plug it in if the phone shuts down at all. I will definately be buying an extended battery or a battery case to see if that also helps, but if it continues i will factory reset and if no joy .. sadly it will be back to the phone company for a replacement. I have adored Galaxy phones all my mobile phone life, but this is really annoying me now, especially as it seems to be a very common problem with the s4. Not Good.

My battery didn't look swollen at first, but when I compared it to another samsung battery it was definitely fatter, it has a slight buldge in either side. I got a replacement battery and the phone is amazing again. It has lasted well over 24 hours with moderate use and works perfectly. The consensus is that there is often bad batches of batteries. Thanks for the heads up about the swollen battery and what to look for. :-)
