Galaxy S5 Battery Drain

I noticed the same problem last night. Google Play Services soared in use even though I had UPSM running.

Since all of us in this thread appear to have had exactly the same problem the last couple of days, its possible that it will NOT be present in my next battery cycle. Maybe Google Play Services was doing something special on a one time basis

I notice I lost 2% in just the last hour with UPSM enabled and Google Play Services was using 39% of battery usage prior to that time when I had UPSM disabled.

I was having terrible battery drain, had to charge at least 2 times during the day. Now I have started to do a restart every morning and now for 2 days I do 17 hours and still have 20% left on the battery. Same normal usage. Not sure why this is, but glad it got better.

Shutdown and power up fixed my Google Play problem.

Another way to save battery is to go to to sync options for your google account and uncheck all google play sync's like music, newstand, books etc.. I noticed that my drain was back when i used google play music.I unchecked sync specifically for the play's and its back to normal.

It seems like a major bug hope google gets to know about it and works on it

I likewise had an extremely high battery drain with Google Play Services a few days ago.

I turned it off for a couple of days and then on the 3rd day turned it back on.
No issues with it since..... they goofed somewhere...

how do you turn off or disable google play?

@roy862014: how many contacts do you have? It has already been proven that Gear Manager (the app connecting between the Gear and the phone) severely drains battery for people with 1000s of contacts on non-Samsung devices, but this issue could be affecting Samsung users too.

not many around 100 or so no where near the 1000 mark.. the watch is fine.. it was play services that was killing the battery.. as i said i disable google play music, book, newstand syncing and its fine now

I get about a day and a half out of mine. I always keep the basic power saving mode on and just go about my day. I didn't realize there were people that weren't impressed with 24+ hours of juice. I think that's pretty awesome personally...

It can be much more if stupid apps like google play services dont unnecessarily kill the battery!! hate it when developers dont do their jobs properly.. we paid good money for the device why should we get a second class experience due to incompetence by the developers?

Just an update on my S5's battery life.

I keep DATA, SYNC, WIFI, GPS, BLUETOOTH turned off when I am not using the phone.

last charge was Monday morning at 0500.
Tuesday evening at 1900 battery was 68%
Wednesday evening at 1800 battery 48%
Thursday afternoon right now at 1330 battery is 20% and obviously would go well past midnight.

I laid it on the Wireless charging pad just now to see how long this el cheapo $18.99 Qi charger from ebay takes to charge the battery to 100% from 20%.

A short review on the charger pad: At first it would charge with the case on. Today it did not. Removed the case and it started charging.

It seems to run hotter than I think it ought to, I'm thinking cheap price means low quality and not enough headroom to handle the current required to charge the phone.

time will tell if it lasts long enough to be worth the price.... but it sure is a lot cheaper than Samsung's new offering, and it does not make the phone any thicker.

At this time, I am of the opinion that while it works, I would prefer a higher quality device that does not get hot with normal use.

.The one advantage it has is not needing to open the USB port to charge phone.

just watching youtube and surfing on the internet with screen brightness around 60%. i drain about 10% per hour. is that reasonable?

Fair enough. I know my girlfriend's iPhone 4 gets great battery life, even after 2 years. The screen on the S5 is so much bigger though. I bet that's most of it.
