Galaxy S5 black screen upon wake up

I had this happened three days in a row the first week after getting my new Verizon S5. I was not aware of twisting the phone or anything mechanical to cause it. Once when it happened I just put the phone down for about 20 minutes to see it it would come back but the screen still did not come on. Each time I had to pull the battery to restart it.

I took the phone back and the rep suggested several things to try. First was to remove my SD card (which had been in my S3 without a problem). Next I uninstalled Lookout. Then he had me replace Lookout with Clean Master. A week later with no problems I got a new SC card and installed it. I still have not had a problem. Not sure which of these fixed it.

My wife also got an S5 at the same time as mine. Her's has Lookout installed but never had an SD card and that phone has not had a problem.

I should have kept my mouth shut. This just came back this morning. :-! I have not installed anything new but I did remove a few apps that were copied over from my S3.

I believe that's just the software. I find mine is slower than any other handset I have used. When I'm done with a call I take it from my eat and go to hang up and have to wait a few seconds for it to light up again. Weird

I'm having this issue and it's driving me crazy. Even more so than the problem we're discussing here which I also suffer from.

I rest my case.

It happened to me twice on father's day. After the first time I pulled battery and was freaking out. The second time it didn't go all the way black and that's when I realized that I managed to accidentally turn the auto brightness off and move the slider all the way down, at least all the way the first time. I could faintly see it the second time and clicked the auto brightness. You can remove the option from the notification panel. Figured I'd make my first post useful.

I also had the same problem since 2 weeks ago i bought my GS5 (SM-G900H). I did try all the ideas and tips from all of you guys here but nonetheless it still happen. Mine even not showing the boot logo on start up but only can hear the samsung's music. I hope it's not the hardware issues since i still put on hope with the upcoming kitkat 4.4.3. And if the blank screen problem still occur after this updates, then i will go to samsung service center because i started to believe it is the hardware issues.

Guys I think, that the issue is HARDWARE. I have the black screen since day one for more than a two months now. My observations indicate that when the battery level is going low (e.g less than 30%) the black screen appears more often and more frequently. What are your observations?

Actually, I just figured out what it really was the first time. The second time was definitely what I said before. But it was just a coincidence. Check out this pic!

dark screen, where is that option on the phone???

if i didnt personally put an sd card in my phone, i dont have one?

dont even know where it would go, mine did it first time today after two months ownership, i took case off, while i was trying to figure out how to remove battery, which i havent figured out yet, the screen came back on while i was messing with the case itself

watching vid now on removing battery, wow, i didnt know how little i knew till i knew i didnt know

It happened to me while i was using the phone to make a call, i had the device up to my ear so the screen went dark when up to my ear, is there a way to change it so it does NOT go black when you put up to ear, if so i would check that as that is when it went black and stayed black

i say stayed black but after taking the case off and messing around with the back the screen came back on

I intentionally applied it and there's sounds as well. So must be a glitch enabling the screen function of it. The shortcut is 3 power button presses to turn on or off. Try that even if it is not enabled.

Hi All,

My Galaxy S5 screen has also going black usually after charging via USB on my pc screen. I have disabled svoice and screen animations. Been at least 5-6 days. Not sure if the problem is completely fixed but appears to be a magnitude better. The screen animations can be disabled by following the instructions in this link. Hope this helps. I set them to animation off.

My s5 has been doing the wake problem a week after I got it. The first thing I tried after reading all the post was pulled the battery and gave my simm card a push and felt a click. Doesn't seem to happen anymore.

I suggest resetting your simm card to see if that helps.

After having tmobile send two phones, been back on my original phone and after a firmware update from tmobile and so far I have not had the issue at all. I did not restore from backup after the firmware update I setup from new and used helium to restore data after reinstalling my apps, at least the ones I use the most... so far been weeks since and phone working perfectly

Glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem. It happens to mine daily. I recently took off some apps that had been newly added since it def hasn't been the whole time I have had the phone. Hopefully that helps because it really is a pain in the *** when I have a case on the phone and it constantly does this. Wonder what else could be causing it

Yeah on an iPhone 4 that is no longer produced.

Been tired with the black screen problem and exchanged it with Note 3. Wow, couldn't be happier! This device is awesome on every things! I don't care about finger prints feature, water resistant or heart rate sensor on S5. The Note 3 i got is working smoothly and seamlessly...and i love the s-pen also.
