galaxy s5 camera lens cracked

Did you end up calling Samsung? What did they say? Same thing happened to me. I've had a case on it, haven't dropped it and have only had it in my purse and less than 30 days after purchase, the camera glass is shattered.

I had the S3 before I got the S5 and didn't have this issue with it. Seems the S5 is more sensitive & protrudes out more. Seems a lot of people are having this issue so I would say it's definitely the device and not the user.

I called yesterday and they said it's $99. I still think that's a load of crap though since I purchased mine less than 30 days ago. There should be some kind of warranty for that short amount of time.

A million people can call, yet they will still say it's an unknown issue

I wonder if lemon laws apply? Also, if enough get together, a class-action suit could be possible but I bet that it is difficult to prove.

I've had mine since release day with no case probably 70% of the time and still have no problems with the camera lens

I've had the Galaxy S5 since the month of launch and the camera lens hasn't had any signs of wear. I do keep it in a thin TPU (Diztronic) but that's it.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (Verizon)

I had my S5 since launch and it's been ok. Thinking getting my wife this phone buy worried about lens. Those who use a spigen case like me with lens encaved in, have u guys ever had a problem? Looks like I'll stay away from otterbox

I've only had mine for a couple of months and managed to DESTROY the lens glass last night somehow. I took some pictures after getting home from work, then the phone sat mostly untouched until around 10pm when I head it beep telling me the battery was getting low. I have the Samsung wireless charging back on it and a TYLT Qi charger. I reached up and over the arm of the couch where I was laying and sat the phone on the charger. I didn't hear the tone letting me know it was charging so I slid it around, but since I wasn't looking I actually slid the charger off the edge of the table and the phone too fell to the carpeted floor from a height of about 3 feet or so. I picked it up, put it on the charger and never gave it a thought. This afternoon I went to take a picture and the screen was all hazy looking, I thought maybe there was some condensation or moisture on the phone, possibly from laying on the counter or maybe a little moisture from being in my breast pocket on the the t-shirt I was wearing so I flipped the phone over and the camera lens is obliterated. Shattered from the middle out, almost like someone took something pointy and punched the dead middle of the lens glass. I can only think it happened from the drop last night which is absurd considering the height, conditions and carpeted landing.

I cleared out the shattered glass and now the camera won't focus on anything and I am trying to find a replacement lens to DIY.

Anyone had any particular success with one kit over the others?

How it happened was different for me but this is exactly WHAT happened to mine. I bought the lens replacement for about 5 bucks shipped. I had to replace it twice though. The first time I forgot to blow out the tiny shards of glass that got stuck in the camera so it couldn't focus. After the second replacement came in I peeled off the first lens, which btw is WAY easier to take off than the shattered one, and used a fine tipped tweezer and a vacuum cleaner to get the most i could out. Focus is fine now. Only remaining issue is that there's two tiny dark spots that I think are just something on the camera lens. Overall, for 10 bucks I'm way happy with the result.

I know I am not the only one with the problem of the lens cracking for no reason. I have contacted a lawyer about starting a class action suit. Samsung says they have never heard about the problem... but I have done research and found all of you! So I am moving forward and hopefully we will get this taken care of. BTW I AM NOT FILING THIS ON MY INSURANCE! THEY ARE PLUM STUPID!

I went ahead and sent mine in to Samsung to take a look at. They were quick to tell me that while my phone was just a month or so old, and under warranty by time, it was NOT under warranty by issue being as it had physical or water damage to it (physical in that it was dropped and camera lens broken) despite the fact that it was about 3 feet onto carpet seems like a design or material flaw to me.

Still waiting to hear back from them on the phone. I was given a UPS label via e-mail to get the phone to the service center in Texas and told that typical turn around time is 2-3 business days shipping to them, then 5-7 business days for repair followed by 2-3 business days return shipping to me. I was also instructed that once they get the phone, they diagnose the issue and repair then contact me with a price quote and approval for repair. They got the phone before noon on 9/17 and it has been sitting since. No work was done on it and I have not been contacted about any repair issues. Does this mean it takes them a week to figure out what is wrong, let me know and ask for approvals then another 5-7 business days to actually fix it?

We'll see.

**update**
Rather than bump post, I'll just edit with new information. I contacted Samsung through their live chat on the support website and when I asked about the status of the phone which, according to the self check status feature, still showed the phone as having been checked in on 9/17 with no change in status. I was told twice in two different chat sessions that the phone was going through the quality check phase which meant they had done the repair and I would be getting the phone shipped back soon. I kept asking how the phone had been repaired with nobody ever reaching out to me or telling me at what cost (if any) the repair was done for.

Finally today I decided to call in because the phone had said the expected repair date would be 9/24 (6 business days from when they accepted the phone from UPS). I went out for lunch and returned to work, armed with the phone number I was given in the chat session. I got an e-mail on my phone and it was from Samsung with an update on my service ticket. The phone had been repaired without any knowledge to myself and never having been contacted prior to fixing it and without ever quoting me a price.

I checked the website and after logging in I read that the price had been changed from $0.00 to $65 for the repair, plus tax bringing the grand total to right around $74. I called them to ***** and complain a little bit, but ended up just paying for the repair and now awaiting the return tracking number for the phone.

Was the repair $74 because you have insurance, or is that the cost of replacing the glass without insurance? I have the same issue, and no insurance.

There is no insurance involved when you send it to Samsung directly. Insurance only comes into play if you go through Verizon/Assurion (or whoever the insurance you pay monthly is trhough)

Samsung will repair the device at whatever cost they determine once they get the device in hand and diagnose the issue. You get a one year warranty on the phone itself from Samsung, if they deem the problem/damage to be something that was within the warranty limitations they will repair it free of charge. Otherwise you have to pay whatever the cost of the repair may be. They also state when you send it in that your device may be IN warranty by time, but not by the condition of the phone, ie water damage, or a cracked camera lens because I dropped it.

I have the s5 active and less than a week of having it I noticed my pics were foggy looking, turned it over and sure enough the camera glass was shattered. I am especially careful when my phones are new and it was never dropped or set down hard and has it's own dedicated pocket in my purse. I've had several s versions and one I dropped and it spider webbed the screen, the other I lost, both were totally my fault but that was after having them for a couple of years. This I can guarantee wasn't anything I did, I think the design is flawed. Anybody ever find a fix without doing insurance? I lost patience reading through the holier than thou comments.

Add another one to this list. My phone has been in an otterbox defender since i bought it. Yesterday afternoon the camera was fine. This morning I noticed the lens was spiderwebbed. This is infuriating. Its almost definitely the camera and key situation but that is BS for it to be so flimsy.

Bought my phone on june 13... about 2 weeks later picked it up in the morning after charging and realized the lens cover was shattered. Let it be for about a week and finally got around to calling samsung canada about warranty etc... decide this after the charge port cover broke off... I had had enough I called and flipped. 900 dollar phone thats water resistant and its not after about 3 weeks.. BULL****!!!

after explaining and arguing with about 5 or 6 different representatives I finally had enough of people transferring me that I just asked for the supervisor. At this time I explained in full detail and the guy kind of gave me a chance and offered me the email and a reference number to send some pictures to their warranty department. well to go with the rest of it, if there is any physical damage or they feel that it was a physical issue they will not cover it and I'll basically be effed in the a and it'll be a waste of time.

Left it after that didn't decide to follow through and I actually emailed them because I knew what the multiple things on the edges of the phone they would claim it was my fault and charge me to fix it. This is my first ever Samsung product and I can tell you with the rate that im going I dont think ill buy another of their products again. Pretty sad you dont try to help your customers.... if this was an apple issue youd get a new phone on the spot in store, none of this bull****. Apple atleast deals with their customers in that aspect.

Euther way the other pic is of it after about a month and a half then I picked it off and havent ordered a replacement yet. Kindof angry with my self that I didnt but there was already 3 dust specs on the lens the week after it initially cracked so screw it. Either way glad to see im not the only one but its pretty sad the way samsung deals with it.
