Galaxy S5 contacts not showing up in gmail

[AC Question]

Have a new Galaxy S5 and I am guessing that the contacts were saved to device instead of the gmail account because I do not have any contacts in my gmail account on my computer. However on my device it says that my contacts have been synced. Is there a way to get my contacts to show up on my gmail account so if something happens to the phone I have a backup in gmail?
