I have a Galaxy S5 Neo phone. Runs Android 5.1.1.
I have a Macbook Pro running on El Capitan (10.11.6)
I have Android File Transfer installed on the Mac.
It seems that prior to El Capitan update, Phone and Mac were happily connecting and allowing music and video transfer via USB (with AFT).
Now when connecting, simply seeing "Could not connect to device. Try reconnecting or restarting your device"
Tried that. Many times.
Tried different USB cables. Many times.
Tried 'USB debugging' on the phone.
Tried completely deleting Android File Transfer and all related files before re-installing.
Same message every single time.
Help!!

I know there is an option in the phone, not sure in yours specifically, but the options are something along the lines of.
- USB Charge Only.
- Mass Storage
Etc.

Sounds like it's on USB Charge Only. Once it's changed to Mass Storage should detect the phone

Thanks mhinc but no luck.

When connected, the phone shows two USB/PC connections available. One is Camera (PTP) which when checked allows photos to be transferred from phone to Mac. The other is Media Device (MTP). This is the one I want!! When checked, nothing is picked up by the Laptop.

This is a real puzzler and I am coming to the conclusion there is no way to do this.
Annoying part is that this all worked fine (with Android File Transfer) on my previous Galaxy phone!

Any advice appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! I merged a couple of your threads--in general, it is preferable to continue the discussion in the original thread, rather than creating a new thread. Otherwise, multiple parallel discussions can develop, which can be confusing for all parties involved.

Unfortunately, Android File Transfer has been known to be glitchy for quite some time. I realize this isn't a direct answer for you, but if you can't get AFT working again, try a wireless file transfer solution like AirDroid or Wi-fi File Explorer.
