Galaxy S5: "Personalize call sound" grayed out

I can't personalize my call sound. I find it grayed out in one menu and in a different menu I get the error message "unable to turn on adapt sound while the speaker is on". I've muted the speakers but that doesn't help. Verizon s5.

I believe the adapt sound is only for headphones. Try plugging a set in and see if it works.
