Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

If I had to choose.... Man... That'd be hard :P.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced.....

I put myself in this vicious cycle where once I get one phone, I want the other.

I'd like to wait to see them both side by side in the real world before I make my decision.

Buy them both. :)

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

The One is an attractive looking device but its practicality is severely limited when compared to the S5. The camera is considerably worse than the S5 and in testing even the S4 bests it. The battery is 200mAh smaller and is non-removable which is a big deal. At least make the battery considerably larger if it isnt going to be removable. The S5 is also a noticeably smaller device than the One which goes in favor of the S5.

With that said there is one other device that is grabbing my attention and that is the OnePlus One. It is going to be an aluminum unibody device with a sub $400 price tag. Just look at the below specs and tell me its not an interesting device.

I frankly can't wait for April 23 so I can finally see what the OnePlus One will look like because at the moment it is rivaling all the flagships already released.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

I heard some rumors today about Samsung pushing up the launch date of the S5 a couple of weeks due to some international timing issues? I am hoping this happens sooner rather than later to also compensate for some instant gratification folks who dont want to wait until the 11th.

I would love to receive my s5 before April 5. But after reading that article it sounds like it would only be true for Korea .

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

this is a tough question to answer by just looking at the specs.
Two deciding factors for me will be camera and battery. I hope someone does a side by side test of the following:

1. photo / video quality (outdoor, indoor, macro, all that good stuff)

2. battery life (desipte smaller battery life, htc claimed 40% more battery life due to new chip)

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

No 4K video in the HTC. Ba bye. S5 has it. Hello Sammy!

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

I am amazed that HTC doubled down on the 4mp camera. That camera is actually lower mp than the front facing camera. It's mind boggling. And for me, totally unusable.

The waterproofing on the S5 is a huge differentiator. It will be so popular that I bet Apple will be waterproofing their phones next year. So for me to even consider it, the HTC camera had to totally blow me away. Instead, it totally blows.

Needless to say, the S5 is all but guaranteed to be my next phone.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

s5 is actually *not water proof.
It is water resistant... meaning u are not supposed to submerge it in water.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has the same IP67 certification as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, which means according to the IP rating scale it is completely dust-proof and can be submerged underwater up to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes. The new perforated design plastic back and USB port at the bottom are both rubber sealed to make this possible.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

s5, if i were to choose between the 2. Waterproofing, camera, and wireless charging make it the obvious choice. There is way too much wasted space on the one and the camera is still below the likes of other flagships. Poor htc, samsung released a "sub par" (according to some, ha) phone and you really could have capitalized, but you fell short once again.
Plus why go backwards with no OIS in the new one? Come on HTC what were you thinking??

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

Between the two I would say the Galaxy S5 by a large margin. Galaxy S5 will have a much better camera, battery swapping (If you like that), water resistant, smaller footprint despite larger screen, and assuming it isn't laggy I think a lot of Touchwiz's features sound like especially the exercise oriented ones.

HTC One on the other hand has that horribly disappointing camera, huge bezels which make the phone bigger than it should be, and I've heard it's slippery.

Samsung made Touchwiz usable and made it perform in line with what a Snapdragon 801 can do. With a larger screen, lighter/smaller build, bigger battery that's removable, ability to use wireless charging, and a superior camera, the S5 is definitely the superior device.

Which is funny considering they said they were going to "One Up" them.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

I don't see the appeal of the Metal body, I can't spend considerable money on a phone and not put a case on it. In that regard the S5 WILL be the more popular phone and will have a larger case market so the advantage would go back to Samsung for me.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

All respect to the HTC one. Looks like a great phone and I'm sure HTC fans will be very happy. For me though the s5 fits my needs.

I feel sorry. I feel sorry for HTC. They got the tech sites really excited over an aluminum build and front facing speakers and that's all they've got. They had a chance to really separate themselves this year and they blew it. Expect more of the same as it pertains to their quarterly earnings reports. And this time it's 100% their own fault.
