Galaxy S9 audio may beat V30

OK thanks thunder18, will try the resize tomorrow. Now I followed the screens hit and still no haptics on keyboard. LG tech support thinks it may be an actual defect on this device.

Are you guys getting normal fine haptics on keyboards in LG v30?

I am a reviewer on Head-Fi and my own blog...I just want to say all you have to do is plug your cable first always then attack IEM or HP and it automatically goes into "aux" mode. If you have the T-Mobile variant you can download HiFI Status from the app store and it will show you what mode you are in. I love the V30 sound but I always plug the cable in solely first. Through the hp jack the V30 is a great audio device. The Samsung wont have that level when using IEM/HP's.

It's a 24bit DAC still, so no it doesn't beat the V30. Plus there's a way to hack Dolby atmos onto the V30.

You are correct. But your V30 has to be rooted to do this.

Ye iPhone is unbeatable in a few select categories. My gf has always had iPhones now on the iPhone 7 plus. Best camera I've seen, perfect haptics, loud speakers and a cool feature that allows you to use the keyboard as a mousepad to easily get between letters when editing text.

And what does this and your previous post have to do with the topic at hand? If you want to talk about your gf's iPhone, feel free to do that elsewhere. Not everyone is trying to hear about it.

I just read that the S9 will have 24bit and DSD support with dolby atmos. It would be great if we could get it in a future LG update.

It won't sound as great as the V30. It's amazing how they can add a DAC into such a slim phone. Can't wait to get the LG V30s. LG is ahead of the game in terms of audio. Bluetooth will never sound better and USB C headphones will cost too much.

It won't sound as great as the V30. It's amazing how they can add a DAC into such a slim phone. Can't wait to get the LG V30s. LG is ahead of the game in terms of audio. Bluetooth will never sound better and USB C headphones will cost too much.

All phones have a DAC (digital-to-analog converter), otherwise we wouldn't be able to hear anything since there's no analog recordings (cassettes, records, reel-to-reel) on our phones. ☺ Now LG's Quad DAC...that is offering increased audio quality.

As a P.S. I received my Note 8s this week and I can say that with Samsung's UHQ Upscaler audio sounds great on my Sean HD595s and Bose QC25s. It's be fun to compare this to the V30's quad DAC and see what sounds more pleasing. Samsung's smoke & mirrors or LG's precision?

I've had 2 V20s and I understand the quad DAC has remained the same. While they sounded good they didn't blow me away as the "best d*mned sounding phone around." I'm comparing the sound to my not-so-inexpensive OPPO and Cambridge Audio DACs and Burson headphone amps. Toys are fun.

I say that to say I'm a reasonable judge of headphone sound quality, based on varied experience. Unless the V30 sounds DRAMATICALLY better than the V20s I've had I remain skeptical that "Samsung devices cannot match or come close to the quad dac on the V30." Both handsets have DACs and the V30's quads are technically more precise. Whether or not that translates into better sound with the same content is something I'd like to hear.

That said, I'm always the first to admit that I may be mistaken.

It's mostly software enhancement and tricks just like the Dolby Digital Plus. The Quad DAC is an actual hardware inside.

The quality of the quad DAC is subjective for me and I was not blown away tbh.

Quad DAC aside I think Samsung offers better audio over Bluetooth and I prefer the eq on the Samsung too.

How well something sounds to a given person is subjective. How well the sound measures isn't. AFAIK, Bluetooth doesn't measure better than wired audio but with use of an EQ it may actually sound better than un-EQ'd wired cans. It just depends on the person's prefs. Given the same amount or lack thereof of EQ wired should...should sound better but it may not even be a difference some would notice.

I've read in audio forums from folks that agree with you. I tend to listen to my audio rig with the sound unmolested by tone controls and EQ but the UHQ Upscaler on my Note 8 doesn't sound bad at all to me. In fact I find it rather pleasant and I'm not normally into smoke and mirrors.

The V30's quad ESS DAC and very clean, variable power (and auto-selecting) amp are awesome, but one point that hasn't been discussed yet is potentially even more important for mobile (i.e., earbud/IEM) use: Samsung's phones tend to have a fairly high output impedance (~5 Ohm), which skews the frequency response. A lot of sensitive IEMs like the SE846 sound like a muddy mess out of a Samsung phone. I too would to see Samsung fix this, because in every other respect their phones are awesome. But so far LG are (and continue to be, even with the release of the S9) far ahead in terms of wired audio output.

I so want to get a V30 and keep it for a week or two to do a back-to-back vs. my iPhone X, Mate 9, and Note 8. Gotta try to have a little discipline though.
