Gallery isn't populating with images on the "SD Card"

Oh, btw I found a way to manually fix this. If you clear data from "Media Storage" and clear data from the app you're having problems with it forces everything to be re-scacnned.

I ran into this issue again with 4.1 and that fixed it.

I have been flashing a lot of Android 4.1 night lies and have now run into this issue (randomly) on:

Team EOS stingray 4.1 nightlies
AOKP toro 4.1 nightlies

Clearing data for gallery or media storage did not resolve the problem.

Running Fix Permissions from within ROM Manager (may be other ways to accomplish this) DID resolve the issue.

Ironically, ROM Manager is the reason it hid the photos. We have a thread in the rooting/rom section, but basically someone (on RM's side) thought it was a good idea to put a ".nomedia" file in the root of the SDcard directory...which, in turn, hid all of your SDcard media, including photos.

Hi Spenzer4Hire, thanks very much for this ROM Manager tip. For the record:

Galaxy Nexus running JB 4.1.1 Rooted but stock

I tried everything before this ROM Manager fix, and even after trying it didn't work UNTIL I moved (as in cut+paste) all my pictures from the device and back on to it.

Here's the motherload of all the things I did combined to fix this annoying issue:

1. Deleted cache of both Gallery and Media manager AND force closed both.
2. Used ROM Manager to fix permissions.
3. Rebooted into recovery mode and cleared my cache there as well.
4. Moved my pictures to my PC and back.

Things worth noting:

I don't think that this is a ROM issue but it might be a ROOT issue.

Last night, an hour or so after the issue occurred I had this weird message pop up on me asking me how I would like to share this, and as I was in the middle of doing something on the phone I accidentally selected E-mail. I now have this draft in my work email draft folder containing a big ass (4+MB) error .txt file and a screen shot of said error. Which program those originated from, I have no idea, and so far by trying to search the whole phone for the files I have had no luck (this is using Rhythm Software's file manager). Unfortunately I can't view the attachments from my draft folder and I wouldn't want to send that big of a file because it might put a load on the company network. I hope I can locate them later.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text I hope this fixes it for everybody else as well. Once again thanks a lot!

Edit: I just found the txt file in a new folder I noticed in sdcard0. Couldn't find the screen shot but I deleted the txt from the draft email and I emailed myself the result to see what I had a screen shot of. I took a few screen shots earlier yesterday, and I actually noticed that the date and time on this error screen shot was in the afternoon. I now remember I simply was writing this pretty epic word in Wordsmith (scrabble like game) and I was taking screen shots to send my friend as a tease before I actually posted the word.

I think what happened is that the "screen shot making app" or whatever it is that makes screen shots crashed then and generated a report. I guess this might have been the trigger for my issue with the images later on.

I also noticed that now my panoramas and videos appear ordered before my pictures in the Gallery app, and the pictures themselves are not in the correct order either but that's not that much of an issue, and the new ones get ordered correctly.

In case anyone is interested in viewing either the error report and screen shot PM me. I can upload them to my Box/Dropbox account and share them with you. I have no idea if this is worth sending to Google anyway. And I'm really not in the mood of writing a long explanation to them right now either.

That's interesting. I had noticed the .nomedia file appearing sometime in the last week or two, but it's not unusual for random files to appear in sdcard root (like the dun file...VPN related?) so I didn't think much of it. Immediately before flashing a new ROM or ROM update I always manually clean up all files/folders that I didn't create myself. So I would have deleted that file before a wipe/flash. Also, it's not there now. I haven't checked the other thread but I think I saw a ROM Manager update recently...maybe they reversed their decision?

Thank you very much my friend. The procedure you described above worked like a charm in my Desire HD, which was full of NOMEDIA files for no reason... (didn't put them there, that's for sure).

Excellent! I've had this Gallery problem since last year (Samsung Epic 4g). Your instructions worked perfectly. Thank you so much! :-)

After weeks of having the stock android ringtones I finally found a sollution that works. No need to run recovery, clear cache, force kill or re-copy the media (which BTW I tried and didn't work)

It seems the media scanner was not running upon reboot as it should (still don't know why), so the solution was downloading an app called "scan media" and all it does is launch the media scanner process to search for media and populate the media storage. The app doesn't require any permissions at all.

The solution was inspired by the one offered by Visine86, except that this application requires no permissions and it doesn't do anything other than scan for media.
Thanks Visine86!

Thanks for quick pic!

OMG THANK YOU! finally my digital comics are in order no more hunt and peck :D I can read deadpool straight forward now Q w Q well deadpool isn't really straight forward as a rule of thumb

Hello All,

I've searched high and low and cannot find a solution to this problem. The other day I wiped my phone for various reasons. Ever since I did the wipe the gallery does not display any of the images that are already stored on the device. If I take a new picture it will go right into the /sdcard/DCIM/Camera directory and it will display in the gallery. Same thing happens if I download a picture it will go into /sdcard/Download and will display in the gallery.

However, any of the images that are already in any of the folders on my sdcard do not show up in the gallery. Is there a way to force the gallery to scan the sdcard or something? Thanks in advance.
