Gallery Won't Open

tbok73, you are safe with that. Just clear the Data then if the Cache is grayed out. You will not lose anything on your SD card. I've had to do that many times. The only thing you will notice is that you might have to re-setup your ringtones, as I believe they are stored there also. But this method does resolve the gallery problem without having to do a factory reset.

Clearing the gallery cache and data will not delete your SD card contents. Not even a factory reset with clearing the data and cache will do that so don't worry. If cache is not lit up that means it is already cleared out. You're only clearing the data and cache for the app......nothing that will affect your SD card.

I just had the same Gallery issue pop up this morning, and after reading through all of these pages was able to diagnose and remedy the problem:

I have Gun Bros. on my phone (a Glu app), and the newest update added a "Glu" logo pic into my gallery. I installed Gallery 3D, deleted that one pic, and presto!

Thank you all for your help (whether you knew you helped or not!) :-)

It looks like there's common ground in this problem... Some games overload the gallery with images. Clearing the cache gets rid of the debris. Cleans it out so the Gallery can function normally.

Perhaps there's a setting in these offending games that will clear the cache on closing.

Until minutes ago I had the same problem. The problem developed when I cleared the data. I found and applied this solution (interestingly, step 1 is was what caused the problem (I have no idea why I did that in the first place), but executing the next two steps and power-cycling the device recovered from the problem):

Here is what worked for me...no reformat required:

Go to:
Settings >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> All tab
For each of the following, I clicked on Clear data and Clear cache: (Just clearing Gallery did not do it for me)
Gallery
Media Container Service
Media Storage
Then I restarted phone by holding down power button, clicking Power Off, then held it again to turn on and working great! It did take a few minutes for the Gallery to get all the thumbnails again the first time I started it, but it works!
I was afraid I deleted all files on SD but they are all still there. Just be patient, will take several minutes for Gallery to repopulate.

If this works for you, please be sure to visit the original post and "thank" the contributor. :)

Actually here is a trick I have figured out, I have noticed that the issue does not appear to be the image files as users have been thinking has been causing this issue. It appears that apps have a tendency to use the .nomedia files to hide their files from the explorer and this seem to actually cause the gallery crash issue, to test this I made a number on .nomedia files and dropped them in a number of folders and almost instantly my gallery crashed... After clearing cache it was resolved because the system rescanned the files and notices the .nomedia files correctly.

It seems that hiding files that the gallery has already cached makes the gallery think that the files are corrupt.

Thank you for the info it worked for me. The app that keeps causing the problem for me is Vignette, a camera app. its a shame because that app takes beautiful pictures but this is the third time it corrupted my media. Before this fix I re loaded the the operating system on my droid x and I was hesitant to use the app but now its easy to repair so ill reload the app.
Thanks again.

Had the same last week, factory reset solved the problem

This question has been asked SOOOO many times already (and continues to be asked almost daily it seems).. I am surprised it is not a Sticky by now. (or is it???)

Same problem, after installing SyncMyPix I lost the original Gallery. i didn't put it together until I read this thread. Great info! i cleared my cache and all is well

This worked for me also on the Galaxy S4 at&t sgh-I337 running jb 4.2.2

I tried everything from rebooting, battery pull, pulled my micro SD card and sim. No dice. Gallery kept crashing and wouldn't launch. Followed the instructions clearing the cache and data. Reboot holding the power button and its back to normal.

I did have to reset my ring tones and unlock image since they were on the external SD card but its back to normal now. Thanks

Thank you SO much. I did it and to be honest I was really scared to lose everything, and when it didn't show up at first, I was really scared. But everything is still there so I'm really happy since my photos mean a lot to me. So thanks haha :))

Re: Photo Gallery Won't Open-Fix

I started to have this problem too. Affects app downloads, camera, gallery and occasionally facebook. I have done 3 Factory Data Resets and the following instructions above to clear the data/cache for Media storage and Gallery. Cannot find the media container service app? Running 4.1.2 on a Razr Maxx.

just want to add to this:

I also noticed that in file application " X-plore" folders had a red dot in the bottom right corner of my internal sdcard and I could not delete files in that volume!

after the delete cache and data powered off / on as suggested.

All was good and the red dot in "x-plore" app had gone and I could delete files in that volume.

not sure what the red spot means but guess it was a read only?

hope this helps identify the issue in some way.
