Gesture buttons no longer disappear

I have just noticed that my navigation/ gesture buttons are now always displaying on every screen, whereas before the buttons would disappear. I did not change any settings.

I can find the setting to turn gesture on or off.

What has changed? How can I get the buttons to disappear again?

I don't remember them disappearing. I've always saw the pill and back button on every screen.

Only button that disappears is the back button when it's not required. The pill is always there.
