Gesture navigation might be the only option on Pixel 3

I think Pie is going to wear me straight out this week ... You know what "they" say ... Everyone loves progress, but nobody likes change... I'm definitely feeling that tonight!!:p

I'm just not a fan of the big notch on the 3. I hate it on my iPhone X and I'll hate it on the 3XL.

The iPhone X notch is too big , I think the pixel 3 will be ok.... looks same as my 1+6 which is not bad . Ideally I like essential notch

From what I've seen and if it looks like the size of the cut out that you can simulate in the developer options then it's definitely bigger than the iPhone X. But regardless I'm just not a fan of any notch.

I didn't even know you can simulate it through developers option, just checked it out . No it won't be like that at all

one thing for sure though, in accessibility settings turning animation off this phone is wicked fast

I understand you guys liking the new gestures or getting use to them by now , but if you used other phones that do it better it just makes what Google doing bad . the phone's I'm use to it on is the iPhone X and 1+6 ...I hate to see how Samsung going to do it lol
From what I've seen I think Moto has done it the best on Android.

That's why I'm buying the 3, no notch.

It seems like you guys are telling me to suck it up and get used to it.....

I guess I'll try them again once I get the stupid update.

So two things from the RUMOR MILL.

1) Test devices (3 XL) running Android P have gestures on by default, but it is changeable in settings.
2) Test devices (3 XL) running Android P have gestures still part of the Pixel Launcher... putting Nova launcher on the device reverts it to navigation keys.

And two things from the article that everyone reporting on it seems to have missed:

3) "While Pixel devices that are updated from Oreo will still see their three-button navigation by default with an option to switch to gestures, future Google phones (and any other manufacturer that wants it) will ship with gesture navigation turned on by default." This says, that gestures will be enabled by default. It does NOT say that there's no option to change away from gestures.
4) The editor's note, "This section has been updated to reflect that Google did not confirm that future Pixels will only have gesture navigation, simply that the default navigation system in Pie is gestures." This also says that gestures will be enabled by default. It does NOT say that there's no option to change away from gestures.

So points 3 and 4, when taken in the context of points 1 and 2 - seems to indicate that the whole internet is crying over approximately nothing.

Obviously that could be wrong... but until there's reason to believe that Google changed this approach, which would be contrary to all four points of data, my guess is we're going to be ok.

I was feeling some apprehension about Pie yesterday... Just felt like the system I was used to had changed so much and I didn't understand some of the thinking behind the design.

Then I read the piece on the blog side that Andrew wrote and it helped me see their point of view. The design is actually a bit brilliant. I just didn't see the philosophy before. It's a perfect fit for how I use my phone.

Apple users said the same thing.

I like the gestures on the iPhone X, but I agree, they look half-assed on Android Pie.

I Never used the Moto phones with gesture ,so can't comment on that

Me either but check out this video. It shows all three.

Another note on the gestures, I got the update to P this afternoon and I'm running it, trying to give the gestures a fair shake but for whatever reason (I think my short fat fingers are part of it) to get the app drawer to open I have to swipe all the way up to the top of my screen which is a stretch for me one handed and I just don't care for that. You can't just flick it, you only get recent apps.

I will admit, flicking the pill to the right to switch apps is faster than double tapping the button, not a ton but it is noticeable and more consistent as sometimes my double taps are faster than the phone can register and the pill swipe seems to remedy that. However, I still don't like the long swipe for the app drawer.

App drawer opens when I swipe up about a third of the screen. You can also do double short swipes to open the app drawer.

Half way up the screen and this is what I get. I have to go at least 2/3 of the way up to get the app drawer to open.

From I understand, the swipe up to get the app drawer is 2 swipes by design. From Andrew's interview with EK,

"As for the app drawer essentially being a two-staged release that first shows a row of suggested apps followed by the rest of the apps, EK says it was a very deliberate choice based on user feedback. The numbers showed that 60% of the time when people swiped up from the bottom to display the app drawer, they took one of the suggested apps at the top. Google's algorithms that choose when to place apps there can be applauded, but it just goes to show how few apps people actually use on a regular basis. By making that interaction faster and simpler, it improves the speed of getting to the right app a majority of the time."

So it's designed intentionally to be two separate swipes.

I still think Google should fix it, why not leave the swipe for home and app drawer and like long press for recent apps or hit the power button twice for recent apps and not have them interfere with the app drawer and home

I hear ya .. At first, I was 100% felt the same. The app drawer was bugging me ... But really, I think their approach prove functional. I may be biased because 90% of my phone use is between GA, search and probably 6 apps on any given day. For me, this is showing to be an improvement.

Double tapping the power button is already the shortcut for the camera. Having some options to customize the navbar gestures would be best.

Maybe I'm use to my other phones but at this point it hasn't grown on me , I did like how the slide on bottom of the pill to go through recent app page . I've gone back to the buttons on my pixel it just flows much better the way I like
