Get IMAP email a/c on Gmail app to notify new mails?

Just moved to Android 7.0 on a Moto G5 from Windows 10M so had to grapple with the Gmail app included on this new phone. Don't use Gmail for anything other than the obligatory Google account so added my regular IMAP email account. At first this all seemed to be fine with new mail messages from the IMAP account popping up nicely and notifications appearing in the clunky pull down notifications area - a default sound also played I recall.
Sadly this no longer happens, no notifications and no sounds played for new emails from this IMAP a/c. I have checked every setting I can find within the Gmail and Phone settings such as Notifications, Sync, Background Tasks, Do not Disturb, App Optimisation etc. everything looks to be OK.
Now a test email from my PC, via my IMAP account to Gmail a/c DID trigger both notification and sound but sadly not from friends email a/c to my IMAP a/c on this phone so I would really appreciate some fresh insight, suggestions as to how I might fix this problem without the usual mobile phone get out of 'perform a factory reset'.

Welcome to Android Central! Just to be sure, are you opening the Gmail app, tapping Menu>Settings, selecting your IMAP account, and tapping Manage Notifications there?

How long are you waiting for the email to arrive? If the sync interval for the IMAP account is relatively long, could it be that the notification is actually delayed (rather than missing) because the email hasn't been synced yet?

Email is coming in quickly at the minimum 15 mins setting for IMAP accounts, quicker for Gmail account. Notifications do appear in the notification area it is just no ringtone sounds to let me know!
Going to settings, notifications and selecting a ringtone for my IMAP account test OK, just don't play on new mail arriving, Grrrrr.
