Get the Note 8 or wait for the Note 9?

Note 9 won't be that great.
The S8 and S8+ wasn't much of a upgrade compared to my S7 Edge so I waited for the Note 8 before upgrading.
Next year should have a Note 10 with special features and the S10 will be in turn garbage.

I found the Note 4 very laggy and frustrating to use. I hated it! The Note 8 is so much better in every single way (except for the IR blaster being absent).

If you truely find the Note 4 usable, then I'd wait until Note 9 is announced before deciding on Note 8 or Note 9.

considering most s9 rumors point to a phone not unlike the s8 I would get the note 8 at a cheaper price and enjoy the amazingness that is this phone

Skip the out dated Note 8 and go for the S9+. Better yet, pick up the iPhone X and be the winner of the game.

You should wait until you know what the S9 or S9+ is before you decide. Saving money isn't always the best way to go.

Either way it's going to be a huge upgrade from the Note 4. I personally would wait for the Note9. The Note8 is a fantastic device, but many of us are having problems with the phone freezing about 2 months after release (freezing started in November). There's also the infamous 'battery bug' which has not affected me personally.

I regret my purchase due to the issues mentioned, though I acknowledge that the phone is otherwise the best on the market. Certainly the most complete in terms of hardware, software, and features.

If I had known then what I do now, I would have purchased a different device (which I ended up doing anyway due to the Note8's freezing problem).

Wow! I’m really sorry to hear you had those issues. Hadn’t read about them. Was it a small, small percentage of owners that experienced this? I love my N8. THE Best phone (to date) that I’ve ever had. No problems and bought the phone directly from Samsung since the first week of release. No issues at all.

Whatever I get I will probably keep for more than 2 years. A marginal upgrade of features doesn't mean much to me. I will likely wait for the Note 9 at this point and be very happy with it.
Ditto. Whatever you do get, don't always get the next one, I always skip at least 1 generation.

I don't know what percentage of users is affected, but there are multiple threads about it, the longest of which is this four-pager: https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...te8-keeps-freezing-standby-4.html#post6145190

People affected have tried everything from hard resets to exchanging their device, and it's still happening.

We have two devices in our house, neither have suffered that or any other problem, including the dead battery thing in my phones case.

Obviously I feel for those with problematic devices, but it certainly doesn't seem to be widespread.

No, not widespread, but can be extremely frustrating when it happens. What struck me is he said the problem persisted after the device was replaced. How the heck is that possible??? Something really odd there. Happy to say I have had no issues with my N8 - fingers crossed.

I have the Note 8 for the stylus ONLY. Contrary to most of the opinions here I believe the Note 4 to be the superior device.

This is horrible advice. The Note 4 is SO much better than the 5. You're better off getting a new battery for the 4 and hard resetting to start from scratch than to reduce your features with the 5. Even better, root the 4 and put a speed demon custom ROM on it. If you do the latter you'll be set until the 9 drops.

I had the Note 4 (Edge) since it first came out. PLEASE don't tell me it's a speed demon. When they recalled the Note 7 I went back to the Note 4(Edge) and I couldn't not believe the thing was so slow (And yes I had started it from scratch). Guess the Note 7 spoiled me. So I bought the Note 5. It is 10 times faster than the 4 (STOCK). No exchangeable battery, but guess what? I didn't need it. Wasn't happy with no SD card either, but I did learn to backup my photos and take them off the phone. As far as ROOT, I don't buy a phone to root and AT&T made it even harder to do with its blocked bootloader. And root wasn't obtained till after 7 came out, I tried to root the 4 before buying the 5, but still the locked bootloader stopped me again). I know the Edge is still popular after 4 years, because some people out there want to hold onto their phones till death do they part. I'm not talking from what I have read, but from experience of using these phones. And yes, I have rooted plenty phones in the past. I have the note 8 now, but if Samsung didn't offer me the $425 trade in, I would still have the Note 5. I was happy with its speed and the things I could do. BUt a $550 Note 8 was too much to resist. LoL
