Log into your AT&T wireless account and use chat or call 611 during business hours and ask to have your $36.00 upgrade fee waived. I've upgraded several lines over the last couple of months and I have been able to get all of my upgrade fees waived. You can get it waived before you receive your next monthly bill, or after the upgrade fee appears in your monthly bill.
The customer service rep will give you a canned response when you ask for the upgrade fee to be waived:
"The upgrade fee is to allow us to assist customers with recommending new equipment, offering special offers and discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, and supporting the returns process within 14 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs."
Be nice and say that you've been a loyal customer for so many years and that you commited to stay with AT&T for another 2 years ... ya da ya da ya da.
You should receive this reply:
"I will go ahead and adjust that charge for you, but please remember that everytime that you will doing an upgrade there will be $36 standard fee. Stay in this chat while I apply those adjustments for you."
If at first you don't suceed, chat or call 611 again to get another customer service rep. I've heard of others who had to chat or call three different times. If your chat or call is not going anywhere, say thank you and end your chat or call, and try again.
Again you can get this credit before your next bill arrives, or if you already have it on your monthly bill, they will give you the credit including the tax right then and there.
