Getting a Nexus 5X to use with Android Auto? READ THIS FIRST

So there should be no problem despite the fact that one needs to get a A/C-USB cable?
Have someone tested it yet?

I was supposed to have new cables today, but I got Amazon'd. Should be able to answer that tomorrow.

There are also some nifty little adapters on Amazon, should you have another phone that you also use with Android auto.

OK, got my cables. Short version is it works *exactly* like you expect. And nice that I don't have to worry about plugging the cable into my phone the "right" way. :)

tl;dr: No issues at all.

I'm having one issue, which I'll have to investigate some more.

I can only connect with an almost full charge. 95% and above and I have no issues. Two other times, at 44% and 77%, I can plug in, but no power and no AA connectivity. I'll have to look at it a little deeper, but it seems to be a power issue so far.

Hmmmmmm. I'll try to reproduce.

Update: Just tried at 52 percent and it works fine. If I had to guess your battery percentage is a red herring.

I don't know. Off a full charge yesterday, I let my phone sit around for a while before I went out and tried it. 85% and no connection. This morning off a full charge, it worked fine. Maybe I need to look into the 3rd party cable I'm using.

Managed to figure out what's wrong. The unit flashed an error message:
USB2 was disconnected for device protection.
Do not re-insert this USB memory into the unit.
Press reset to restart USB memory.

Which basically means that there's a short in the cable. Ordered some different A to C cables, and hopefully one will work.

To follow up:

I spoke with Pioneer, the cable manufacturer, and Google all about this. Pioneer was the most helpful.

I bought some other cables from different manufacturers to see what would work.
A different USB 3.0 (5V 3A) gave me the same issue of shorting out/overdrawing on power from the 8100.
The USB 2.0 I bought had a lower max power capacity at 2.6A, and that worked 100% - AA connects and I'm charging.

I got my Nexus 5X yesterday and also have some USB to USB Type-C cables. Plugging the USB end into my computer gives me normal charging speed for the phone. Plugging it into the USB port for Android Auto in my 2015 Hyundai Sonata shows "Charging slowly" on the lock screen and at 55% battery left, it calculated about 6 hours to charge to full. I'm guessing the USB port in the Sonata isn't putting out much juice to charge with. Android Auto worked perfectly though.

I have the 5x and pioneer AVH-4100NEX. I can't AA to work.

I have USB A - C cable that I bought from Play when I ordered my phone.

I've contacted Pioneer and they think everything is good on their end.

When I connect the phone nothing happens on the phone side. Any help is appreciated.

Mine's worked fine. You've got the AA app installed, right?

thank you for the reply. Yes, I have AA installed on my phone. I'm wondering if the issue is the cable coming from the H/U. It is an extension USB cable; installed by the audio dealer. I connect my USB micro to A cable to the extension.

Yeah, that'd be the next place I look.

Before I look into ripping out my H/U...what screen should the H/U be at before I connect the phone? I want the phone's Bluetooth off prior to connecting, correct?

You want your phone to already be connected to the head unit. But you can delete it if you want - you'll just have to link it up again.

From what I went through with Pioneer: start at the beginning and see if AA works with any other android phone, A to microB. If that works, that means your unit and android both work.

Chances are that there's an issue with the cable. From the 5X board, there are multiple posts about problems with A to C cables. I had an issue (read above) that was solved by changing to a lower amped cable. The 3A one I first used allowed my 5X to overdraw on the Pioneer unit and cause it to enter a safe mode. Using a 2.4A cable worked.
