Getting low on ROM?

Sorry all you T Mobile people. I accidentally posted this here when i meant to post it in the international galaxy S3 i9300 forum. I apologize.

A few days ago, I checked my running apps (in Settings, Manage Applications, Running tab). I was down to 108 megs unused. That seemed awfully low to me, so I set about uninstalling or disabling all but 2 home pages, all but 2 widgets, a bunch of rarely used programs, and whatever other bell or whistle listed in Services --except for a few essentials and/or system services. (Took away most of the fun of having a smart phone. Listed under Cached rather than services are three apps I would rather not give up-- folder organizer, Swype, and apex launcher.

Now, when I first power up, I have about 250-290 megs free, with 400 megs used, plus or minus. But if I just leave the manage apps window open, I can watch the available ROM decrease down to something in the middle 100s. (152 available; 627 used) Is this normal? Is it OK?

I have the 1 GB ROM, 32 GB storage I9300 running ICS with a 64 GB memory card,

I think you have ROM and RAM confused. If you have the international S III, you would have 1GB of RAM (random access memory), which is the high-speed memory space that keeps data from services and open apps readily available. The more apps (background and foreground) and services you run, the less RAM would be available. The amount of free RAM will change dynamically (as you've already noticed), as the OS moves background apps and services in and out of it (memory management). I wouldn't get too hung up on this as long as your phone is responsive and doesn't have frequent slow-downs.

Getting back to ROM, this would refer to the actual storage space of the phone. In your case, you have 32GB of ROM (of which, slightly less would be available to the user because it's also storing the Android OS), supplemented by 64GB of extra storage with your microSD card.

You are absolutely right. I did get them bass-ackward. Thanks.

Today for the first time, I'm seeing intermittent slowdowns on the Web (dolphin browser using today's update of the unfortunate upgrade of a few days ago). Also Gmail, greader (not Google reader), go sms, newsroom (which I just uninstalled in favor of greader), and pulse, which I'm about to uninstall. I wonder if greader could be causing the slowdowns. I've been using it only for a few days with a lot of feeds.

In any case, I'm still worried about my ram. Are there caches I should be emptying? I've read that live wallpapers use a lot of ram. Is it significant enough that I should give up my lovely scrolling text wallpaper? What sort of an impact do third-party home screen launchers or third-party keyboards have on the speed of the S3?

Or have I spent too much time with Windows?

Unused ram is wasted ram. As long as you have enough you are all set. I have T-Mobile version with 2gb of ram. Love this beast. Also went with the 32gb of int memory.
