I spent a lot of time looking for the answer to seeing (and hearing) text messages in the car (2017 Ford Expedition)
As it turned out it was a lot easier than the message I got from the car would indicate.
1 - Get your phone synced with Bluetooth and once the car says it is connected
2 - On the phone, go to Connections, Bluetooth, and next to the car you are connected to, click on the GEAR and allow (turn on) Message access.
All of the text messages that arrive on your phone will also arrive on the SYNC3 in the PHONE section.
You delete them with the phone, not the car.
You can have SYNC read the messages and if you want to reply, there is a limited REPLY menu with messages like "Call you in a while" or "I can't talk with you now" or "See you soon" or "Almost there.
